Dropping an AP class for an elective?

I'm a rising senior and this is my current schedule for next year:

AP Lit
AP Stats
US History Accelerated
AP Gov
Chinese II Honors
AP Human Geo

I've taken only one AP class before (junior year: AP Psych)

I'm really not interested in taking AP Gov- I'm just not that interested in the subject. I know it sounds stupid, but I'd rather take electives like Human Relations, History of Music, or some 3-D art class.

Yes, it sounds very stupid. But I'm not applying to top 50 schools, so does it make much of a difference?

Go ahead. Your schedule is pretty rigorous as is, and you already have that accelerated history class.

It won’t matter much at all to the schools you’re applying to, but are you gonna major in something history related?

1) Whoops didn’t realize I posted this in the wrong section my bad

2) I wanted to major in communications/advertising…it seems like any of the electives I want to take would be more closely related to it than AP gov

Your schedule would be fine.

Another possible consideration besides rigor here is rank. If your school uses weighted GPA for rank and if rank is a concern for you (for example, if you are on the bubble of the top 10% or if being top 5% would get you merit aid at some of your schools), that might factor into your decision about dropping the one AP. Otherwise, I agree with posters above that your schedule will be plenty rigorous without the extra AP for the schools you have in mind. It’s fine to drop it.

Would you have to take a non-AP civics course if you dropped AP government?

AP human geography is usually seen as the least rigorous of your AP courses.

My kids needed a government-type class their senior year, so be sure to check the requirements. If you don’t need to class to fulfill a graduation requirement, take what you’ll enjoy. It won’t make that much of a difference. It’s important to have some fun too.

I agree, check that you will have all the classes you need for HS graduation and if so, it is fine to drop the one AP.

@niceday- My school doesn’t rank

@ucbalumnus- I’m not even sure if I’ll drop AP Gov now because I don’t know what other courses are available that period. I don’t have any more AP options if I dropped the class (except Enviromental Science, but I have a bad record with sciences).

And I know Human Geo is seen as the easiest AP course, but there’s no reason not to take it so shrugs

@calla1- All my requirements are done (the only classes required for senior year are US History and English)

My personal opinion is to drop it and have fun with whatever you take in its place.

Currently, I face the same dilemma. Right now, I am taking Accounting, Small Business and Management, Physics, AP Gov, AP Calculus, and English. I also am on the Cross Country team, and I work. Last year, I dropped out of AP US, and AP Gov seems to be a repeat of the class. I have little time to do anything but homework, and Im going into the business field. I’m a Senior. Should I drop AP Gov?
