Dropping AP Physics 1

Hello. I was recently admitted to UCLA’s incoming fall class of 2019 as an incoming freshman in College of Letters and Science with Undeclared-Social Sciences as my academic major. I am currently taking 6 classes with 5 periods (gov/econ are block scheduled).

My first semester grades were as follows:

  • AP American Government - A+
  • AP Microeconomics - A
  • AP Physics 1 - A-
  • AP English Literature - A
  • AP Statistics - B
  • Spanish 4H - A+

My classes and grades are as follows for the second semester so far:

  • AP American Government - A+
  • AP Microeconomics - A
  • AP Physics 1 - D
  • AP English Literature - A
  • AP Statistics - B
  • Spanish 4H - A+

Given that I am not going into engineering or any science-oriented major (plan on doing business economics), would dropping AP Physics 1 jeopardize my admissions decision, provided that I inform the college about the schedule change immediately? For reference, my teacher is wasting more time than he did first semester and is spending about 40-50% of class time talking about The Bachelor (the television show), quizzing us on morning announcements, and expressing dissatisfaction about his marriage (to put it lightly). If I do decide to drop the class, how should I communicate this to the college?

I deleted your other discussion since it was a duplicate. Yes you can’t drop it without compelling reasons. And that’s not one of them. You got in partly cause of strength of senior year schedule. Colleges don’t know how your hs teaches it they just know it’s an AP class. If anything pull that D up cause otherwise that’s grounds for rescindsion.

Pull it up to a C, otherwise you’re in trouble.

On the UCLA admission webpage they have a “contact us” tab, and on that page they have a link for admitted students. Use that.

As said earlier, if you drop the class or do not get at least a C then your admission may be rescinded. Nobody here knows what they will do, but it will make for an uncomfortable summer until they get your final transcript and decide. You may end up attending your local CC.

Also if you drop the class and notify them, they will likely respond that your admission is now “under review” and they probably won’t be able to update your status before the deadline to accept other offers has passed.
