I think in your first semester at Michigan you are allowed to be excused for a “W,” meaning it won’t appear on your transcript. This is what my advisor was telling me my first year. Just in case though, DON’T take my word for it. Speak with your advisor.
Edit: In case you’re taking about this coming Monday, you might not be able to contact an advisor in time. In that case: there’s nothing wrong with taking 12 credits for a semester (I’m doing that now). I’m a senior though, so Idk about freshmen. Why are you worried about taking 12 credits?
@eyo777 I’m concerned because everyone around me seems to be taking 16. I’m afraid to add another class two weeks in because I probably missed so much already. I also feel like a quitter… I dropped a class because it was too hard for me instead of pushing through it.
At orientation my daughter was encouraged to only take three classes. That’s for engineering, so maybe it’s different for other schools though. She has 13 hours, and many of the student she’s met have similar class schedules.
I’d say it’s better to ease into it. Drop it and don’t look back.
No, it is not a bad idea. There is nothing wrong with taking 12 credits. If you’re already struggling, you may have to take the class again anyway and it may affect your grade in your other classes. You already have a cushion of 11 credits, so need to push it your first semester.
Go ahead and drop it immediately, but make sure you have downloaded a copy of the syllabus. If it is a required class you should determine why you found it difficult and find a better professor and/or get a tutor
Drop the class. First semester can be a brutal adjustment for incoming freshies. If you’re drowning and it’s just getting worse…do what you have to, but make sure to do it 100% by the book, officially and with everyone signing off who needs to. If you’re getting aid…talk to financial aid to make sure it won’t effect your aid. My kiddo had no problem dropping down to 12 credits for one semester that was particularly tough for her…it did not effect her aid…but each aid package is different, so make sure. Dropping to 12 your freshman fall is not unusual:) UMich is a little different than high school, eh? You’ll be ok, I promise. Just jump through all the hoops and stay informed. Counselors, office hours with teachers, don’t miss out on deadlines and doing things the right way.
