I am starting to feel very distant from high school life. I am in my senior year and I don't feel like I am getting anything useful out of school. I don't enjoy the subjects in my high school and I am just doing the required work to pass.

I was thinking about dropping out of school and working until I am 18 and then getting my GED.

I don't have very good grades, and I didn't even get a very good score on the SAT. (2.62 GPA, 1590 SAT)

After this year I plan on attending a local community college, and joining the military, and the school does not care whether i have a high school diploma or a GED..

I cannot see a reason to finish my year at this prison. Does anyone see any reasons that I should stay?

That
s about the dumbest idea I
ve heard, especially considering you
re a senior. Just finish up the year, there really isn
t a point in dropping out.

But is there a point in staying? The community college doesn’t care if I have a GED or diploma, and if i was to transfer my credits from the community college to a real university, they wont even look at my HS stuff.

I know I cant get into a good university with these grades/SAT or I would do that and skip these 2 years of community college all together.

i dont have many friends and I don’t attend on going to graduation / prom, so don’t say im missing out on experiences.

Maybe the school doesn`t care, but the military might.
My cousin is in the military, and hes told me theres a lot of drawbacks to the military funding, etc, also including personnel. This isnt like the early 2000s, when theyd take pretty much everyone. He said that theres a lot of perfectly good people who are healthy and have high school diplomas waiting to get in, so they arent approving as many medical waivers, moral waivers, etc. GEDs have long been something thats changed a lot as far as if they let people in with them or not. Lately, folks with GEDs can get in if they score a 50+ on the ASVAB or have 15 college credits, so this would work out since youre planning on going to community college. My cousin has told me though, that recently, they`re thinking about possibly not letting anyone with a GED in. Not for sure though, but something to think about if the military is your goal.

Having a GED will limit your opportunities and even if you are transferring you may experience issues with not graduating high school. You are senior, dealing with one more year is worth it. If you truly hate high school either take really easy classes so you don’t have to do any work or classes that you know will interest you, you should still be able to alter your schedule for next semester.

@CE527M The military couldn’t make a restriction against GEDs without disqualifying any child who was homeschooled or unschooled and ended up with a GED. I mean, they could, but they’d end up having to have a “I was homeschooled so I have a GED,” waiver. No fun. But it’s because they’re cutting a third of funding to each branch (thankfully) and they’re pulling out so they don’t have as many spots available as they have guys not re-upping

@SerenityJade…I know, and it
s unlikely to happen (That GED
s wouldn
t be accepted) but who knows, the way they
re looking to cut it. They have so many people who meet the requirements, they can afford to be strict with handing out waivers and requirements.

I guess. Most kids I know who want to go military (most wanna go Army) are bright or gifted though so they’ll probably be fine.

Odd though. There are military recruiters around my school all the time. But that’s probably due to the fact that under 40% of grads go on to any sort of college and a lot just go military.

omg… this is the first time I heard the words ‘drop out’ on CC.

I personally think you should stay because you are a senior. But with that SAT score, many colleges will accept you. Maybe you won’t get scholarships, but you can get admitted into colleges!

How close are you, credit wise, to graduating? Could you graduate at the end of this semester? We have some seniors who just come 1/2 for PE and English and then go over to the community college for their classes there.
