Dropping out and restarting college?

Hi, I know this thread will make me look really bad/stupid, but I’ll post it anyway since my life is pretty hopeless anyway…
I am currently a junior at one of the top engineering schools, but my GPA is extremely bad (2.2). I have gotten D/F for 1-2 classes every semester (total 8 of D/F’s) , and I am pretty sure I cannot raise it up above 3.0 no matter how many classes I take from now on. I know this is just another excuse, but it’s not that I’ve been lazy; I actually did try my best, but I guess my intelligence level just does not suit this prestige school. I’ve lost all my self-esteem and been extremely depressed ever since freshman year. I’ve always thought that I was in the wrong school, but didn’t want to disappoint my parents, who always kept encouraging me that I’ll do better next semester (turned out to be false). I couldn’t change my major since majors at my school are very limited to engineering, and liberal arts are usually laughed at… Should’ve never listened to what other people say tho… .Since I know that I’m not likely to survive this school, I’m planning on dropping out next semester. I’m thinking about going to local CC then transferring to 4-year university, (I’m not going to transfer any credits from this school to CC, meaning that I’ll be entering CC as a new, freshman. )
but I feel like my grades from this school will haunt me when applying to univ., no matter how well I would achieve at CC. Will the 4-year university I’ll be applying at CC look at my grades from my current school, and automatically reject me? Or will they only look at my CC grade, if I do extremely well? I know it’s impossible but I’d do anything to “reset” everything about college. Thanks for reading… I just don’t know how to deal with myself anymore.

They’ll look at the transcripts from both the CC and your current school. However, if you do extremely well in CC, they’re likely to put a lot more weight on those grades than the grades from your current school.

Will GPA on the transfer application cumulative (CC + current school) even if I don’t want to transfer any of credits taken at this school?

It depends. People in situations like this are sometimes eligible for academic renewal, which means that the GPA from your current school wouldn’t factor into your cumulative GPA, but the transcript from that school will still be a part of your college record. Policies on this are going to vary from school to school though.

Best answer is you should change your major and stick it out.

First of all while you can start fresh at a CC, all your transcripts must be sent in when you apply to university.
-Some universities will allow you to replace those Ds and Fs with new grades from your new CC.
-Other universities will average both grades into your new GPA
*No university will award credit for the Ds or Fs tho.

Second in order for universities to SERIOUSLY not consider old grades those grades must be old. So you are basically done trying to get into another prestigious university. I would say to a large extent you would be lucky to capped at your local state university.

Third you might be in CC for longer than you’d want. Most CC are only geared to transfer into the local state system. So the articulation agreements and suggested educations plans (general education & major pre-reqs) are geared toward the local and state universities. The good CC here are impacted so it might take you a while to get all the courses you want. Plus you could get distracted with other aspects of life.

There are reasons to goto CC tho: like cost. So if money is an issue then I’d advise going to CC.

In short if you do goto CC then you would want to gear up for your local state flagship, add in the local state uni & apply for readmission to your current uni. Your odds of getting into other prestigious universities would be incredibly low.

Go meet with your advisor, and find out what your options are. It may not be too late to change your major and graduate on time. Or, with that string of Ds and Fs, no matter what you do you might need at least an extra semester to graduate.

And pop by student health. You should be speaking with a counselor there about your emotional state. Getting that pulled together will help you view your future more rationally.

I never failed a class, but I came close. I graduated from my Top LAC with a 2.7. Then I changed fields entirely and made myself a whole new life.
