Here's my "comments" section from the form:

"The Spanish class at Saddleback was offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30 to 7. A month after the class started, I was given the prestigious honor of performing with my district's Honor Bandhowever, the group would have mandatory rehearsals on Thursdays from 5 to 9. My instructor refused to let me study the material on my own, insisting that I either attend or drop the class. I agonized over the decision, but ultimately chose to pursue my passion."

Considering music was a huge part of my EC's, does that sound reasonable? And even if it does, will UCLA think so too?

Yes, it sounds wholesome and reasonable. In the crux of the issue, I doubt the School of Engineering and Applied Science even cares whether you're taking a given foreign language class or not... you're safe with that explanation.

Are you appealing or planning to apply. I have some firsthand experience with dropping Spanish III. My teacher was HORRID at my school, but since UCLA was my dream school, I dropped Spanish III then took Spanish 1 over the Summer at CC. Luckilly the 6 week course was transfered back into my school for a full years credit (With the weighted honors no less!) Needless to say, in a supercompetitive UC like UCLA where it recomends 3 years of language, I knew better than to risk my admittance. It worked out in my favor too... I believe if I take Spanish 2 at this CC this summer (I still have the books), I can wipe out all the Foreign Lang GE requirements UCLA has! Anyways, if you still have time (Junior yr), I highly advise taking Spanish 3 over the summer or Senior year. If you're appealing, then I think you have a legit chance.

yourmom182- I applied already, and was accepted as a mech engineering major. still in shock So I'm not appealing, just dropping a class.

Incidentally, I called the MAE department and spoke with a couple of people...and they said it wouldn't be a problem. The most likely negative consequence would probably be having to retake Spanish III over the summer, and I just don't see that happening.

Actually, I'm pretty sure UCLA's foreign language requirement does not exceed the mimimum 2 years. I only took two years of Spanish and I was still accepted.

possibly not in engineering, but UCLA's College of Letters and Sciences requires a foreign language equivalent to an AP class, or year 5 in HS. Otherwise you have to take a language when you matriculate.

Just to clarify, the HSSEAS's general education requirement does not include any foreign language requirement, nor does it accept any foreign language courses for GE credit unless they are of course level "3" or higher.

For admissions, I believe all UCs say 2 year req. 3 years rec. I took the 3rd year over the summer, since UCLA was competitive enough and I knew I wanted to go there, I didn't want any easilly avoidable flaws or imperfections on my app.
