Drug culture

What is the drug culture like? I know alcohol is extremely prevalent, but aside from that, what kind of drug use exists on campus? I'm Californian and not faint-of-heart regarding this stuff, so tell it like it is (low pressure to partake in them, I hope.....).

Last year, the Rice Wellness Center did a survey of all undergrads about this issue. Alcohol is DEFINITELY the most prevalent of all drugs–about 66% of students drink. Marijuana is the second most prevalent, with only 13% users. Harder drugs (coke, etc.) are used by about 1% of the population. Nationally, we are on par with the average for alcohol consumption among college students, but are far below average in terms of everything else.

Interestingly, students were also asked to estimate the number of drug and alcohol users, and often grossly overestimated these figures.

In general, students don’t really do hard drugs, because if they did they’d fail out. O-Week coordinators, masters, and RAs create floors of residential colleges with similar experience levels and interest levels in terms of drugs and alcohol, so if you’re not into that stuff, it’s unlikely that you’d be put on a floor where that’s a big part of the culture.

In terms of my own experience, I would say alcohol does make up a portion of the social culture here, but other drugs are pretty rare. I’m sure they’re around campus but people don’t go around talking about them or pressuring you to use them. I guess I would say they’re there if you want but unless you actively go looking, you probably won’t be able to find them.

Finally, though alcohol is the most prevalent drug here, that’s definitely not to say that you need to drink to have fun. The residential college system offers a great family-like environment with tons of fun programming and activities that don’t revolve around alcohol, and as there are many many students who don’t drink at all, they typically don’t have any problem finding friends who feel the same way they do.

I’m going to give the canned answer that’s actually very true: “It’s there if you want it.”

As one of the students from the 1% “hard” drug users, I can say that if you’re looking for a good drug culture, you should consider not coming to Rice. I love Rice, but the only thing I really miss is a better drug culture. A decent amount of students smoke marijuana, but I enjoy some of the finer drugs and am somewhat of a loner in my mental explorations.

Most students just drink when they party, but I have a few friends who like to trip with me. If you talk to random people about “hard” drugs, most of them will say something like “I don’t mess with that *,” which is sad because alcohol is the *tiest drug out there (and one of the most harmful IMO).

And in response to “NYskins1,” drugs are there if you want them, but don’t expect to find them easily. Stoners are somewhat easy to find, and so is marijuana, bud" drugs can be quite difficult. That said, Houston has a decent rave scene, so you can always go to raves and find people who do the good drugs.

And we don’t do drugs because we would fail out. I do tons of drugs, and my grades are great. We don’t do drugs because we’re pussies (just saying what I think is the truth). If you do hard drugs responsibly, they don’t automatically ruin your life. ****ing ridiculous.

Hope my response helped; psychedelics have had a profound impact on my life, so I like giving my opinion about these matters.

And **** college confidential for censorship!

They may not automatically harm your life, but they definitely can. I still remember the VERY sad story of the Rice boy who died a couple of years ago from a drug overdose. If I remember correctly, his older brother was also a Rice student and found him dead in bed in his res college. It was beyond sad for everyone involved. Be safe. Be careful. :(

morexer had to create a new account, just so people wouldn’t know his real cc account.

Dude, don’t be scared to tell it like it is… =)

To defend my honor, I would like to say that I don’t think I ever had a cc acount, but I tried logging in with my usual internet alias (morex), but that didn’t work, so I made one. All those drugs probably ****ed up my memory ;)

I get on this site a few times a year, and I happened to run into a thread I wanted to contribute to.

Also, I think that survey might have been asking what drugs students had done in the past month, and if so, it’s not indicative of lifetime drug use.

Yeah, the drug scene is pretty bland… Pot is not that hard to find. Every college has a its own group of stoners. Drugs like shrooms and X are not impossible to find, but you definitely need to look harder. Coke and others are practically nonexistent. Not only will you have a hard time finding someone to deal it to you on campus, but I’ll guarantee you will not find anyone who’d want to do it with you.

I would say for prescription drugs like adderall and vicodin, it’s harder to find than weed, but easier than X/shrooms.

Yeah, drug culture at Rice is lacking.

WOW^^^ adderol is hard to find at Rice? That is surprising considering A HUGE AMOUNT of kids at my schools abuse it as a studying drug. Adderol and Ridlin are some of the most commonly abused studying drugs at my campus. In fact, Alcohol, adderol, and riddlin are the 3 most common drugs on campus (its sad how 2/3 most common drugs are studying drugs)…

oh this is interesting! I don’t think it’s terribly hard to find adderal, ritalin, etc. at Rice, although they may not be top three like at Emory

All in all, Rice has the same kind of drug scene as most top-tier universities. Are you worried about Rice having too big a drug culture, or are you worried that you won’t be able to be high/tripping/rolling/whatever as much as you want?
