Honest opinions on drugs at Rice

I'm just trying to get a sense for what the environment that you don't see on a tour is like. First I want to say that while I personally don't have much experience with the harder stuff, I have been exposed to a lot of it, so don't try to sugar coat it. I just want to get a sense for what kind of drugs are on campus, and how prevalent they are. Also, if you're a Rice student answering, can you talk about your view point briefly? ex. "first year student who goes to parties once or twice a week" ect. Thanks

According to one Rice student I know pretty well, Rice students do very little in the way of illegal drugs, but they make up for it in alcohol.

First year student who goes to parties once or twice a week.

Alcohol is prevalent on campus, but if you don’t drink you can have just as awesome a social life as if you did; no one will treat you differently at all. They will probably say “Hey want a beer?” to which you respond “No thank you” and they say “Okay, cool, come on in and enjoy the fun!”

Drugs are not very big, other than marijuana. I know a decent amount of people who smoke, but it is almost always a very casual, uncommon thing. And if you want to avoid it you can incredibly easily. I would argue that it is less common than on other campuses. Don’t let the drug scene factor into your decision much at all.

Junior here- the drug of choice at Rice is definitely alcohol. However there are definitely quite a few people that smoke, so if that’s your thing it’s not hard to find. Ecstasy is also not that rare. Beyond that, harder stuff (psychedlics, coke, pills, etc.) are much less common. I would sum it up like this- drugs are not very widespread, however their presence is noticeable and you would know exactly where to look if you wanted to.
