thanks so much carolyn! i'm going to see if calpoly admits me first and if they do i will definately visit.. i just don't want to waste money on a plane ticket/hotel room then a week or two later not be admited. i love meeting new people and i'm very social so i'm sure that won't be a problem, but yeah.. i'm sure i will be in for a culture shock. i'm just ready to get away from the midwest and be by the beach..

I would counter that cal poly is one of the "whitest" schools in CA. It is about 70-75% white, an incredible percentage. I would view this as a downside, but then again, I'm an AA-loving liberal. :) But regardless of political views, to say that poly has a lot of asians and hispanics is not correct.

Patientlywaiting - That's a good plan. Giants, you are right, Cal Poly has less ethnic diversity than other cal states --- but we're still talking about 11% Asian Americans and 10% Hispanics. For someone coming from Ohio, Cal Poly will still seem like a whole new world - there isn't a single university in Ohio with that percentage of Asians or Hispanics. I do want to say that I personally think Cal Poly is a great school, with a great location and most of the kids I know who go there are happy with the overall experience. I do hear a lot of complaints about class size, however.

Carolyn- Good points. I suppose with respect to the West Coast, Cal poly is not diverse. With respect to Ohio, it is very diverse. And thank you for the warm comments regarding the school, as I am a student there.

Giants, what has been your experience with class size and different majors? I talked with two history majors who were very unhappy freshman year because of the class sizes in that major, but I have also talked with several engineering students who have been thrilled with Cal Poly. It is hard to judge whether it is just a matter of major or if there is some element of truth to the complaint. I do think that in many ways, Cal Poly is probably an equal educational experience to going to one of the UC's --- and all at a cal state price. Can't beat that and the area is one of my favorites in California.

im a pothead... lol jk but some of the friends i hang out with in the OC are pot smokers even though i never tried it before bc i know i would die if i did it... lol

I think I would side more with the "thrilled" students you mentioned. I'm a biology senior, and haven't really had much of a problem at all with class size. The intro science classes range from 60-120 students, and GE's range all the way from 30-200 students. As you get into upper-division science, however, science classes move down into the 20-40 range.

I agree that poly is one of the best deals in CA. The students are certainly UC-calibre, and the professors are more focused on undergard than on research or grad students. I've saved my parents thousands by choosing CP instead of davis. Certainly I have nothings against davis, as it is an excellent school, but I think I made the right choice.

Thanks Giants.
