I've been reading some ranking lists lately and Oberlin shows up on many of the top lists for the most drugs used.

Is the drug presence really that bad at Oberlin?

iljets, where exactly did you read this?

Princeton Review

both times i visited oberlin on overnights, i only encountered drugs once and there was absolutely no pressure to do it. it's the kind of place where if you want it, it can be easily found. but if you don't want it, there's no pressure and you can just as easily not be around it.

Interesting...I wasn't planning on applying as I'm a math/science type of person, but I'll relay the info to someone who is.

FWIW, I see know reason a priori why a "math/science type of person" should not seriously consider applying to Oberlin.

My daughter, who was a top HS math student, has taken several upper-level math courses at Oberlin. She has found the courses to be very challenging, and the quality of instruction to be very high.

Oberlin has an excellent reputation in the sciences.

I'm thinking about it now. It all depends on how the visit turns out.

Like any college, there is drug use at Oberlin. It's the kind of thing where it's there if you want it and easy to ignore if you don't want it. I know many people who have a great time without drugs, and the other way around. Oberlin is a community where your decisions about using substances is respected by others. I've never felt pressure, either way.

Also, Oberlin is a great place for the sciences. I know a bunch of science majors who really enjoy their classes, and there's research going on all the time. Last year, Oberlin got a supercomputer used for science research, something unheard of for a liberal arts college. There are plenty of resources.

Wow, that sounds pretty awesome.

I just got a mailing from them, based upon my 3 major selections that I made. Pretty interesting reading to say the least, although I suppose only 18-20 Math majors a year is to be expected...
