Hey, my name's Brian from central PA. I'm going to the conservatory for voice, and wondering what Oberlin is like socially. I have heard a lot of pretty extreme things about drug use and stuff like that, and am wondering if it's true. I go to lots of parties with drugs and drinking and I don't really mind, I just choose not to do it, but is it just rampantly running wild at Oberlin? I mean, one can fit in and not do drugs, right? The reputation is that you can't, but I think that's ridiculous and probably not true. Any current students that can shed a little light on this for me, I would love it. I'm coming to Ob. anyway, I just kinda wanna know what to expect, you know? Well thanks a lot...

I don't go to oberlin but I have friends there.

in their scene, they generally partied quite a bit their freshmen year. weekends with weed and alcohol, the norm.

they said by sophomore year people buckle down (oberlin is extremely rigorous, especially the conservatory) and you dont really have time to mess around. their days consist of getting up, going to class, and studying, with some partying (but not much) on weekends. they said you don't have to do drugs to fit in at all. it's a really openminded place.

I have a friend who goes to Oberlin and I visited him once.

That place scares the hell out of me. In the words of Eric Cartman: "It has a llllooooottttt of hippies." Of course, I do go to a military academy, so the scariness of the institution may be limited by my perspective.

I'm going to have to agree with namaste on what life is like there, from what I could tell.

I have several friends who attend Oberlin and aren't into any drug scene, and they haven't expressed any worries to me about fitting in. I would ask current students on the Oberlin board (if you haven't already) since they'll know what's up.

One of my friends is very straight-laced (very liberal, too, but not into wild parties or anything) and she loves it.

As an Oberlin student, I have a lot of friends who do drugs somewhat regularly, and a lot of friends who have never touched pot in their life. There's no pressure either way and people are really chill and pretty respectful of people's choices to do or not do drugs/other substances.

thanks for the replies...all of that is kind of what I thought, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off base. I"m sure I can fit in, I just was wondering how hard it would be lol thanks a lot and anybody else, keep the reviews coming I want to know what to expect!!

My sister and several HS friends are students. It strikes me as similar to any top-tier college...there are kids who party all the time and do drugs, there are kids who won't even touch drugs, and then there are people in the middle. It's a cool place...everyone I know who goes there LOVES it! Have fun next year...their conservatory is incredible! Congrats on getting in!

Hey thanks..sounds good thats what I thought, good deal.
