Dual Credit Out of State

I’ve taken dual credit classes in Texas (English 1301/1302, US History, College Algebra) I plan to go in take for my first year or two. Hypothetically speaking, I go out of state for my sophomore or junior years…will those credits just disappear and I have to take my basics all over again? It’s quite confusing when it comes to transferring out of state.

It depends on the individual schools and their policies. It’s definitely possible to transfer dual-enrollment credits to private or out-of-state public universities, but the process is often less streamlined than it would have been if you stayed in-state. Your chances of transferring a class will be higher if

a) the class was not used to fulfill a high school graduation requirement,
b) it was taken on a college campus,
c) it doesn’t appear on your high school transcript, and
d) your grade was C or higher.

Even if your credits don’t transfer, you should be able to get out of college algebra (and possibly the English classes) by taking a placement exam.

For the record, if you do earn transfer credit at your out-of-state university, the credit will come from the college where you actually took the classes and not from the in-state university you attended right after high school. When you apply to universities as a transfer student, you will need to submit transcripts from every college you’ve attended.
