Dual Enrollment Classes - Elect to Place on HS Transcript or Not?

High school daughter will be taking a couple DE classes at local community college during her senior year. Her high school is fine placing them on her HS transcript OR leaving them off. Her HS does not give any grade bump to DE classes and current WGPA is just over 4.2 - DE may lower but only slightly. Leaning towards including on HS transcript. Do colleges care if they appear on HS transcript or not? Thanks

If you think that the college she attends will transfer the credit, then leave it off. Colleges could be picky about giving her credit if it looks like she is also getting high school credit.

Both of my kids used Calc 2 from a local university to fulfill their required math class credits for high school. We put those on the high school transcript because the colleges they targeted gave college credit for AP Calc AB and BC scores.

Assuming in California…

It will not matter for California public universities – all high school and college courses must be reported for frosh application, and GPA is recalculated for admissions, and credit will transfer as described at http://www.assist.org .

But it could matter for some private universities as noted in reply #1.

Thanks @missbwith2boys and @ucbalumnus - both good points - yes California and good chance D will end up at a California university but open to OOS public and privates. Will probably just leave off transcript to maximize chance of transfer credit wherever she lands.

I would have the transcript from the college appear as a separate page on the transcript from the HS and a notation from the GC that they were not counted or calculated in the HS GPA. College admissions will recalculate GPA’s and give added weight for DE courses. It is up to the individual colleges as to how they accept the credit.

Check with each college where your D intends to apply. Some have a rule that if DE classes are listed on the HS transcript, the student is still a freshman applicant, but if the DE classes are NOT listed on the HS transcript, the student is a TRANSFER applicant.

I would say leave them off. I’ve read on here that I’d s school believes a dual enrollment course is taken at the high school they may not grant credit. If the course was taken entirely separately then it should not be included I. The hs transcript.

At Case Western, for example, it says:" Any such courses taken prior to the student’s graduation from high school must be listed in the college’s catalog among courses offered for degree credit to the college’s undergraduates, taken in the company of matriculated college students, and organized and taught by college faculty. In addition, to be considered for transfer credit, such courses must not have been used to fulfill high school graduation requirements."

So consider the types of schools (private, public) your child is likely to apply to and see what makes sense.

Do they fulfill any of her a-g requirements toward graduation? I think I would put them on regardless. Our school gives a weighting bump for dual credit, but even if they don’t I think I’d still put them on… the only reason I might not though, does her school rank? If the classes would cause her rank to go down then maybe not…

Ok thanks again to all - our GC made it easy today and said they had to be on the HS transcript as the classes are needed electives to meet the graduation requirement. CA publics are fine with DE credit and we will deal with other universities re their policies as we get into next fall’s application cycle. @socalmom007 nice that your school gives the bump - D’s does not but she has 5 AP’s next year which should keep her rank up and overall impact of DE should be minimal.

As far as CWRU, in my experience the key phrase is “graduation requirements.” I took dual enrollment classes and had them on my high school transcript, but I had already met my graduation requirements in those subjects, so everything transferred.

our kids took DE courses. All of their colleges required transcripts from be DE colleges be sent. In our school, because these were part of the HS graduation requirement, they were also included on the transcript.

Honestly…the colleges your kid applies to are going to get the DE course and grade info anyway. So…why does it matter…or not…if it’s on the HS transcript?

The key phrase being “In my experience,” since in my experience, many colleges will not accept transfer credit for classes taken before HS graduation. So whether for transfer credit or just for the application process, colleges may have different policies, so it’s always advisable to check. Although for the application process, I doubt many colleges have a preference as to whether to class is listed on the HS transcript, so long as all transcripts are sent (assuming the college requires transcripts).

I was referring to a specific university.
