Dual Enrollment for Calc, but no college credit?

Question for premed experts:

I realize that ALL college grades count for premed and prelaw, but what about "repeating" a course. For example, a student takes Calc in HS thru a local college in a dual enrollment program, and the undergrad college will not provide "credit". Note: college instructor indicated that their Calc course was beyond AP Calc AB but short of a full BC course.

College academic advisor recommends taking Calc over again at the college. Of course, student could skip year 1 Calc and take Year 2 instead (multi-variate?) but this is not a math geek, so it would be a grade-buster.

What say y'all about re-taking the second semester of Calc 1 in college? (Said student will also have a couple of stat courses for social science major.) Would professional schools care?

Can you decline your dual enrollment credit? If it doesn’t show up on your transcript, your two grades will be averaged by the adcom. However, since you will decline the credit in order to retake the class in college, I’m not sure if this will be the case (meaning I’m not sure if AMCAS requires you to list declined dual enrollment classes).

In this case, the college course is not on the HS transcript. It’s a separate college transcript from a Cal State Uni, but since the course is “taught on the HS campus”, undergrad college will not provide credit.

Parents have the option to add the the dual enrollment credit to the HS transcript, but the district only requires it if a kid needs the credits to meet minimal HS graduation purposes.

So it does not appear on your college transcript at all? If it doesn’t, it shouldn’t count as a college class and thus you should be in the clear to take Calc “for the first time”

Sorry, perhaps I was unclear. The course does not appear on the high school transcript bcos high school credit was not needed. But, the Calc course was/is an official California State University-approved course offering, complete with CSU numbering, so a CSU college transcript was produced. The course would be fully accepted at any Cal State Uni campus, or transferable to any UC campus, where it would fulfill the premed Calc requirement. But is not transferable to many private colleges since it was taught on a HS campus.

Moreover, the college that D is attending suggests a retake to ensure that the math knowledge is solid for any upper level science courses. Thus, I was trying to guess how that might look to a grad school admissions committee.

bluebayou, they both count for AMCAS. My D had that situation with a couple of English courses and an American history course… Whether or not the kid’s UG credits the course makes not a whit. Repeated courses are just plain added in and all college transcripts have to be provided.

It doesn’t matter of the child’s eventual college will accept the course for college credit. As long as the class appears on a college transcript, it will count on the AMCAS GPA, even if the course is retaken.
