Dual Enrollment vs. Dual Credit

D is planning to take a math course at the local CC this summer (she's currently a HS junior). She has to fill out a form for the CC indicating whether this would be dual enrollment or dual credit. According to the form, dual enrollment means she's taking a college class while in high school, and dual credit means she'll get both college credit and high school credit for it. The grade will not count for purposes of her high school GPA either way, and she doesn't need the credit for high school - she'll have 4 years of math without it (plus Algebra 1 in middle school) and more than enough credits to graduate. I'm thinking she should check dual enrollment, as I thought I'd read somewhere that if you got high school credit for a course a college might not give credit for it, but I could be wrong. Is there any good reason to choose one of these options over the other?

I would choose dual enrollment since she doesn’t need the hs credit. Some colleges won’t transfer college courses that are also on the hs transcript; some won’t accept the courses if they were taken before hs graduation; and some will accept the courses regardless of the option you check.

From what I’ve seen, the more selective colleges will not accept credit from a class taken inside a high school (other than through AP tests). Most of the non-selective public colleges will give credit for a dual enrollment class taken inside a high school. Yes, the policies do vary from college to college.

Since she doesn’t need the hs credit, it looks like dual enrollment could leave more options open in terms of actually transferring the credit. It’s hard to say, though, what might trnasfer and what won’t. D1 takes dual credit as there really aren’t other options. As luck would have it, the college she’ll be attending will take all 28 credits she’s earned.

I’m taking a lot of college courses, and I’m doing them dual credit. I’m pretty sure the colleges will accept them, but the policies may vary. If you do dual credit, do the high school and/or colleges put an extra point on your GPA?
