Duke 2016 Official Transfer Thread

Since I didn’t see one up regarding Duke. Just wanted to create one to congregate any general discussion regarding applying and etc to Duke University. Best of luck to you all.

I may apply. Still on the fence about whether or not I should transfer, but Duke is awesome!

Does Duke have a good PoliSci program?

@Arinix I believe so. I may transfer for the business program however.

@Division1to100 correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Duke does not have an undergraduate business program.

@thecoolboy1234 I apologize for not being clear, but the specific major I am looking at is Economics.

Wow I expected more people to be applying to Duke…

Duke has a 3% transfer acceptance rate. Many students are discouraged by that fact.

So glad to see a section for Duke. I applied as a Dance and Africa/African-American Studies major. I think Duke is a fantastic place, and to have the opportunity to finish my college years there would be amazing. Best of luck to you all. I hope that we all hear good news back - from Duke and other places!

Maybe I should have applied. Welp, there’s always law school. Good luck, everybody!

@goldencub The admissions deadline is on the 15th. You still have a chance of if you want?

@Division1to100 Oh, I figured it was in the beginning of March. No, I really can’t afford it - for undergrad, at least. I’m planning to go to one of the UC’s (UCB ideally). Best of luck to you, though.

Hey guys, just a reminder today is the last day to apply. Best of luck to all of you.

I do feel that the decrease in the transfer acceptance rate over the past 5 years is quite discouraging for some, however, schools like Duke and other top 10 schools are a lottery. I have a friend who applied last year as a senior in h.s. and was rejected, but Harvard accepted him. I understand that the transfer rate is ridiculously low, but going in with a positive and optimistic mindset is ideal as you’ll never know if you can get in if you don’t apply.

I’m curious to know how many people actually applied. I originally couldn’t find this thread, so I thought people weren’t as interested in applying this year due to the low acceptance rate

@prohudson16 I agree. I think many of the top schools as you have really low numbers of people transferring. If everyone is interested. Would you guys wanna share your stats and such?

Major: Economics

Comments: Along with trying to gain admission, I am also trying to get recruited athletically.

If anyone else is interested go for it.

Major: Psychology

Current School/all colleges attended (if applicable): Cañada College (California Community College) 3 semesters, UC Boulder (ranked top 100) 3 semesters

Current GPA: 2.76 Cumulative GPA; 2.2 CU Boulder GPA ; 3.73 Cañada College GPA

Credits: 16 first semester (CU Boulder), 13 second semester (CU Boulder), 3 first summer (CU Boulder), 14 third semester (CU Boulder), 12 fourth semester (Cañada), 9 fifth semester (Cañada), 15 sixth semester/this semester (Cañada)

High School GPA: 3.7 weighted, 3.4 unweighted; ranked 74th best public high school in the nation by the time I graduated in 2013.

High School classes: AP Stats, AP Environmental Science, AP US History, AP US Government, AP English Lit, AP English Lang, AP Spanish Lang

ACT score: (February 2016) 29 Composite, 29 English, 32 Math, 31 Reading, 24 Science, and 10 Writing (using the old writing score of out 12). Im retaking the ACT in April to bring the science score up and hopefully the composite too. I have been averaging a 33 on the science section tests as well as a 32 on the english section tests since practicing for the April ACT

Extra Curricular: Psychology Internship at Stanford, President of the Psychology Club at Cañada College, Member of Namaste (social justice club) at Cañada College, Volunteering with Project READ (bringing literacy to the community), working as a tutor for Psychology and English/Writing at Cañada College, Captain of Boys Varsity soccer team Junior and Senior year of h.s., plus won golden boot (most goals scored) my junior session, 100+ volunteer hours while at CU Boulder,

Comments: I know my GPA is extremely low, but in my essays, which are fantastic, explained the issue I had with the multiple surgeries Ive had to go through plus the lack of maturity I had to handle the freedom college provided. My GPA after my freshman year at CU Boulder increased and has continued to increase ever since. I previously applied and was accepted to Elon University last semester to start this spring 2016 semester, but I visited Duke’s campus while visiting Elon during Thanksgiving and fell in love with Duke. I was able to change the start date for Elon to this fall 2016, so it’s Duke or Elon for fall 2016. For my essays, I talked about how I have had three menisectomies and one meniscus transplant in under two years. Through this time, I was unsure of what I wanted to study in college, even though I was in the business school. It wasn’t until I decided to come home after hearing I needed to have another knee surgery that I found my passion for psychology. Since coming home and re-situating my life and habits, I have become more determined and motivated to succeed past my previous academic expectations as well as expectations in general.

Pros: Essays, 3 great letter of recommendations (one of whom is a Duke Alum and has known me for 7 years, another is my advisor for my psychology club and helped me get the internship at Stanford, and the last one recommended that I become a tutor on campus for one of his classes), extracurriculars, Internship at Stanford
Cons: Poor Cumulative GPA, Poor GPA from CU Boulder, applying as a transfer from a community college, low ACT composite, low english ACT section score, very low science ACT score, Disciplinary issues while at CU Boulder (explained in the Disciplinary section plus everything is settled with in the court)

Comments: I previously applied and was accepted to Elon University last semester to start this spring 2016 semester, but I visited Duke’s campus while visiting Elon during Thanksgiving and fell in love with Duke. I was able to change the start date for Elon to this fall 2016, so it’s Duke or Elon for fall 2016.

Questions: Have you had a chance to check the link Duke set out for applicant’s status/checklists? The website was saying there was technical issues.

I’m curious to know if Duke will publicly announce within the next month or so how many transfer applicants there are

@prohudson16 Wow you got a lot going for you. I think your extracurricular activities can pull you through. And yeah I don’t know about the status of the application checklist link.
