~DUKE 2020 RD APPLICANTS DISCUSSION THREAD~

@jarrett211, both the Study of Ethics and the Politics, Philosophy and Economics programs at Duke are certificate programs. Duke allows undergrads to combine up to 3 major, minor and certificate options, and something like 80% do more than just 1 major; but you would still need a major. You could potentially do both certificate programs in addition to a major. Duke also has something called Program II where you can design your own curriculum. You could potentially design an integrated program that combined both of these into a customized major. Here’s some examples of things that students in Program II have done in your area of interest:

Duke would be a fabulous place for you given your interests.

My understanding is that the optional essay is truly optional. If you have something meaningful to say, then use it, but don’t feel that you have to. I also wouldn’t worry much about having to submit all of your scores.

My son was admitted ED last week. Duke requires all your scores of either SAT or ACT. They consider your highest scores in each section. See the last paragraph at this link http://admissions.duke.edu/application/instructions . If you look back through either the ED or RD results in college confidential, you will see that many students were admitted without doing the optional essay. My S also did not do the optional essay.

@asappebble @renaissancedad @neonpinklime Thanks for all of your help!

Does anyone know if I would still be considered for an alumni interview if I turn my app in tomorrow (the 20th) instead of tonight? It says that Dec 20th is the deadline for interview consideration, so I was wondering if it’s like the early deadline where you can submit the day of?

@Perfectionist123 As far as I know, all deadlines are 11:59 the day of (in the college’s time zone). So yes, you can turn it in tomorrow!

How much would it hurt if I did not submit before the end of tomorrow? I have a 32 ACT, and live in NC.

I took 3 SAT subject tests, intending to use only 2 of them. My Biology and Math Level 2 scores are pretty high - the ones I want to include in my application - however, my Chemistry is depressingly low. Duke only requires 2, and it is my top choice. How badly will my chances be affected, you think, by the low Chemistry score? (Since Duke doesn’t use score choice, I NEED to send it) Also, would my chances be adversely affected by the simple fact that I took 3? (I’m only applying to one other college where 3 subject tests are recommended, however I’ll choose Duke if I get in)

@SarahBlue It won’t hurt you at all. They’ll only consider the two highest SAT IIs

Is there a Duke application portal that you can login to and view details? I have not received any confirmation of app having being received by Duke yet.

do people realize the weirdness of requiring all tests but only considering the highest ones? that seems contradictory on its face

and the rest of the college world is moving to score choice at least on subject tests. So duke has the weirdest combo of all…

How will my first two ACTs affect my chances? I got a 28 and 30, but a 32 on my 3rd. From the 30 I got a 35 on math and I think they will consider that over my 31 in math on my 3rd.

I applied last night and ohmygosh I am so nervous. I feel kind of like I failed on my essays (Common app was about doing poorly at a math contest, diversity was on being an atheist). Good luck my fellow applicants!

How long does it usually take to show that your materials are submitted on duke admission login? I submitted on the 20th to meet the priority interview deadline, but their applicant login shows that they haven’t received the common app.

Wondering if any RD applicant has gotten any notification from Duke (w.r.t. interview)?

@Drose55 Make sure you’ve submitted the Writing Supplement too! I forgot and had to submit it today, oops.

I already sent duke my SAT and ACT I have perfect SAT IIs but bad SAT I but I have a good ACT how will they look at that?
