Will you all chance me for Duke? I go to one of the top boarding schools (school does not rank), have a 30 on the ACT and am a legacy. ECs are good and so are grades, though I have some bad grades in high level math/science classes. Does anyone know legacies who got in with similar stats?
Hello:
Duke does like legacy kids. In fact about 10-12% of each incoming class is made up of legacy kids. However note that your grades and standardized test scores have to be up to par with the rest of the incoming class.
The class of 2020 profile is listed here: http://admissions.duke.edu/images/uploads/process/ClassProfile2020web.pdf
An ACT score of 30 would put you in the bottom 20% of admitted students. However grades and scores aren’t everything. If you have interesting ECs, or have something else to offer the university, they may be willing to overlook the low scores.
Hope this helps.
Hi, I want everyone to know that in my opinion legacies don’t really have a leg-up in early admission at Duke. It appears they take most of their ED class via athletes and minorities, and try to balance those perhaps lower scores with higher ED applicants. My advice to anyone who is a Duke Alumna: don’t give to Duke assuming your legacy will matter unless it is in the 7 figures. Ours didn’t, and it was substantial.
