Duke Class of 2018 RD Discussion

@dadfor2014 your son sounds like a great match. Much more than me. My problem is none of my ECs match with my interest in engineering. It’s frustrating when you have informal ways of showing interest that don’t really work as “official activities” to put on a college app. Also hard to explain why engineering and why Duke in just 150 words. His course rigor will probably help a lot. My school offers around ~20 APs but the most I believe ever taken is usually 10ish in four years, and that’s by people who do not take music classes. I wish our counselors understood that they need to explain this in their school reports, but they are big on pushing in-state schools that have much lower standards. Good luck!

^^ Now a days Colleges do look at course rigor a lot, Said that their are some good State flagship schools good for Engineering, if you from Midwest then UIUC is the best, then UM and even UW Madison is not bad either. Duke is still much better then all these though… I know lots of schools in Chicago suburbs push students to UI instate schools like UIUC or UIC or NIU… Their are certain majors in UIUC which are top 5 in the Nation.

^Duke certainly wants its applicants to take the most demanding courseload available to them, but not all schools care that much. I know Michigan, for example, doesn’t really care as long as your GPA and test scores are solid (unless they changed in the past few years). Incidentally, I got into both UIUC and Michigan for engineering, but chose Duke, of course. :wink: Good luck everybody!

I was deferred ED, and since then have been waitlisted by 4 schools (Rice, Davidson, U of Chicago, UVA)… hopefully Duke will see something the others didn’t. :/

Also I’m with you there @heptagirl, I am an Econ hopeful but only one or two of my ECs reflect that.

Good luck everyone!

@meghamind @matrixsurgeon

Did we apply to ALL the same schools, or what?
Hah. Good luck here as well…

Is someone going to make a results thread or what haha?

My S just got an email from Duke inviting him to a Hispanic Weekend. It says this is not a guarantee of admission but that his chances are “excellent”. Very exciting!!

@EtiquetteOfWar @meghamind
It certainly seems that way!! It would be cool if we all got into the same places!

@EtiquetteOfWar @matrixsurgeon lol you tell me! All ivies but Dartmouth, duke, umich ann arbor, usc, uchicago, WUSTL, stanford and local state school

@EtiquetteOfWar @meghamind
All ivies, but Princeton. Duke. WUSTL. Emory. Rice. Stanford. Local State School.

@matrixsurgeon thats nine of the same schools

@meghamind @matrixsurgeon

I applied to WHYP, Duke, Stanford, BU and local state school.
So I only applied to 8 schools, but 6 of them were on both of your lists as well.

Kind of funny how that works out. Have you guys done all the contingency planning? (I.E. If I get into Princeton and Stanford, I’m going to Princeton… and all other conceivable outcomes)

HAHA @EtiquetteOfWar definitely not. Predicting my acceptances would definitely lead to unnecessary excitement over unlikely situations. I doubt I would be put in a situation where I would have to make a difficult choice for myself anyways, though. I have pretty clear preferences in my brain so I am not worried really. Also, my parents have a list of preferences made out I am sure for me… 8-|

@meghamind @EtiquetteOfWar
I think I have played out every possible scenario in my head (no matter how ridiculous, like getting into all of the schools lol) and have made a decision for each of them. However, its just nerve-wrecking to even think about all of those possible scenarios (even the likely one of getting rejected by all the super-competitive schools 8/9 of my schools tommorow). My top top choice is a tie between Brown PLME and Yale.

I just received a likely letter in the mail today! While i’m ecstatic to basically know that I’m in, I’m a bit confused…why would they even bother if I’m only finding out one day early?

Duke Admissions just posted on their Facebook that the RD acceptance rate was 9%…while that number sounds about right, it’s just starting to hit me how selective that is. It’s hard to wrap my head around it…

Ah, well. Good luck to all! Look for that “Congratulations!”

For people interesting in the statistics for this year:
From about 29,273 RD applicants, there will be approximately 2,645 acceptances. Duke is planning for a class of 2018 size of around 1705 students. With current data, that means a total yield rate of about 49.5% and a total acceptance rate of 10.6%.

One word: WOW… Good luck to everyone!! I will definitely need some.

@agitations where? I cannot find that post on their facebook page

@Brouhahah on the Duke Undergraduate Admissions Page, it is the first post on the left-hand side. But here is the direct link to the blog post. <a href=“Duke Students”>Duke Students;
