My friend’s son just got an email that stated they aren’t going to the waitlist. That’s what she just told me tonight. I can’t imagine why she would tell me that if it isn’t true.
I am on the waitlist and I have not received any emails. Do you think they only sent it to a portion of people on the waitlist?
@Toptier, how do you get the numbers, will the yield rate be declared by the colleges so early?
- I receive admissions’ numbers, due to my past/current membership on several Duke governance Boards, Executive Committees, etc.
- Every college has already computed its approximate yield rate, based on the decisions those accepted made by 30 April/1 May (they will change very little from this initial estimate).
My son is wait listed at Columbia, how do I figure the yield for that, any clues? Thanks appreciate your help.
@sonyainva: Almost all the top schools annaully provide yield numbers to US News, they publish them on their own websites (look for PDFs that delineate each undergraduate class’ macro-qualifications, usually in the Admissions area, and also check the student newspaper’s archives), and in the Common Data Set (among several others sources). I’d suggest you check these documents for Columbia’s yield during the last few years (perhaps four). You almost certainly will find yield – and the other key admissions metrics – change at glacial speed. You can also easily estimate a yearly growth (or decline) trend-line (a semi-regression analysis). With this information – you can probably find this for Columbia College/Engineering in <15 minutes – you can easily approximate this year’s yield. Obviously, the key is major admissions metrics generally change VERY SLOWLY.
Thanks @TopTier I had the yield for the last 15 years, but did not know that metrics change very slowly. Being Type A, I wanted exact numbers, since by now colleges will have that information
are you guys sure about the waitlist closing? i had a couple of friends on the WL and they didnt receive any emails from my knowledge
I called my regional admissions officer this morning to check whether or not he received my letter of intersest and he mentioned nothing about the waitlist closing, which I imagine he would tell me
I wasn’t trying to alarm anyone. The boy definitely received that letter because I double-checked , and they are VERY disapppinted. I have no idea why no one else seems to have gotten it, but since that is the case, don’t give up hope. Even though the letter states that they are taking no one this year, if he is the only one who got the letter maybe they were just trying to be nice when they released him from the wail list? No idea.
I talked to an admissions rep yesterday who said that the waitlist will either be closed or they’re taking a few people off.
@nocollegebadness (re post #30): I cannot remember a year when Duke accepted more than a very few individuals from the wait-list. This is the rule, not the exception, and 2015 certainly isn’t unique.
Looks like they took 75 off the waitlist last year.
I called Duke today and an admission officer said they are planning to use the waitlist this year due to high yield
Here is information from the last 3 years:
http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2013/07/24/admissions-yield-highest-1987#.VUjxIPlVhBc
http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2012/07/02/admissions-yield-drops-two-points#.VUjxU_lVhBc
Accepted off the wait list: 75 for Class of 2018; 75 for Class of 2017; 170 for Class of 2016. For the Class of 2012, 200 were admitted off the wait list.
So reliance on the wait list is declining. If yield increased 2-3% this year, there would be no need to use the wait list.
@Kigzcorp (re post #33): By chance, is there a typo in this post?
@KIngzcorp @TopTier yes shouldn’t it read that they’re not using the waitlist?
anything new??
Took my name off the waitlist before may 1st, hope all goes well for ya’ll
I saw that you got into Stanford.
So what were your stats and ECs?
