Duke Class of 2020 Waitlist

@Jwest22 , I assumed that ED yield was 100%. For Class of 2019, ED acceptances were 815.

2650 were admitted RD. Total class was 1750 (basically no one from Wait List). 1750-815=935 from RD.

935/2650=35%.

My numbers could be off +/- a percent or two because it’s likely some ED admittees backed out, and Duke Chronicle-reported numbers may not be exact.

Just hope that this year’s yield should be be slightly lower lol

How does an ED applicant back out? Under what circumstances would that be allowed (since it’s supposed to be binding)? Does anyone know?

Job loss or other change in financial situation. Possible gap year idea approved by Duke. Unexpected illness or accident. Those are some ways I think an ED applicant could be released.

Last year, Duke won the national championship just after acceptances went out, so that probably boosted yield a bit. No championship this year (although tremendous recruiting for next year), so yield could possibly decline some. Best of luck to everyone.

Anyone heard anything recently?

@wstrav I don’t think there is an overwhelming number of students choosing where to spend the next four years of their lives over a championship win for one sport.

“One sport?”–and you call yourself a Duke grad??? Of course, you are correct, most people make their decisions based on deeper criteria, but a 2% change in yield can mean the difference between drawing 50 from a wait list or 0. That being said, I have no idea exactly what caused yield to rise last year.

Agreed that the Championship can make a difference. March Madness comes at a time where a lot of students are getting decisions, so getting into Duke and then following the team through the tournament can make you feel like a Blue Devil. It’s free advertising for Duke and usually when speaking of Duke basketball there is a lot of praise and the announcers talk about Duke’s academics, etc. That could and does easily impact people. Not everyone, but certainly enough to sway the yield by a couple percentage points.

““One sport?”–and you call yourself a Duke grad???”

@wstrav I’m confused by your statement.

nothing. Committed to USC

Not sure if this is relevant but someone at my school got into Duke off the waitlist a day or two ago and committed, so unless they were the only one I think at least a first wave of offers has gone out.

@Senior2016M Can you tell us what region/ state you’re from? Also, was your classmate admitted into Duke Pratt Engineering or Trinity Arts & Sciences (if you know). Thank you.

@NYMom123 From New England, and it was Trinity.

@Jwest22, no offense intended; I was being facetious. It doesn’t seem as if many Cameron Crazies would refer to Duke men’s basketball as “one sport”–more like a religion.

Sorry to say this, but my college counselor was told by the Californian Duke admissions officer that Duke has already gone to the waitlist and is most likely done. They apparently only took very few students off the waitlist.
Berkeley class of 2020 it is!

From my regional admissions officer, he replies that they are still considering the waiting list should any spaces become available. I believe there are still hope, in that case.

Has anyone else heard of any more waitlist movement at Duke?

@NYMom123 I just recently was accepted from the waitlist

Congrats @Dramaice! Can you let me know to which school (Pratt or Trinity) and what region you’re from? Also, are you M or F? Thanks!
