@bludreamer I think the letter is an attempt by the alumni association to manage expectations among the legacies applying ED and their families. It’s getting tougher to get in.
There are no such things as positive signs when it comes to this. Duke will not do anything that distinguishes admits from denies until decisions are out. Every legacy applicant got one of those letters regardless of their chances, probably because Duke wanted alums to understand how much more competitive things are now than when they applied. A lot of legacy applicants with higher test scores than their Duke parent will be denied, and that could come as a surprise to those who aren’t expecting that possibility.
@sanjanagupta1 Brown has 4 essays it’s a lot
It’s been mentioned several times on this thread on CC that ED applications were up to 4850. I didn’t want to believe it, but I stopped by my counselor’s office, and she showed me the form email sent out by Guttentag. ED applications are way up, but not just at Duke. From what I’ve heard, they are way up at the Ivies and a lot of highly selective/elite schools. I have a theory about it …
@SlimJim005 let’s hear it. I think it’s because people realize how competitive regular admissions have become and are more willing to commit early.
Yes, but it’s far more important to some to go to schools like Duke, UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell than others. There’s a lot of pressure by some parents to get the kids into those schools, so that group goes ED. There are a lot of top scoring SAT/ACT kids at my HS who are happy w/State schools and the Honors Programs at those schools. I ask around and the few top scorers going ED seem to have very similar backgrounds.
@SlimJim005 Upenn has almost same ED number as last year. Duke adds 800 after last year’s 16% jump.
I stand corrected. UPenn’s ED number is basically the same as last year. However, it went way up that year and that’s when UPenn’s ED rate dropped below 20%. However, you are still talking about UPenn have a huge number of ED applicants. Also, UPenn really favors legacies – probably a little more than a lot of the other elite schools. Historically, Duke had an ED rate above 20%. My guess is that next year, Duke’s ED rate will plateau as well. If ED gets to a point that it no longer offers a huge admission advantage, then why go ED?
@bucketDad snail mail or email? Also a legacy app but I don’t think we got anything.
Very interesting that Penn’s total didn’t go up significantly. Probably just Duke’s rate ajusting to its ranking as a top top school.
Duke has been a top, top school for years. Dartmouth’s ED apps increased and so did Cornell’s. This is b/c people saw that those schools had ED admit rates over 20%.
haha this snow storm in north carolina could screw things up. I live in Charlotte, NC and people are already freaking out. UNC Charlotte has pushed finals that were gonna be tomorrow back to Wednesday. NC absolutely shuts down when theres snow so theres a possibility that the notification date might be affected by snow. Not saying its gonna happen but theres a chance.
i will riot if its pushed back because of snow. let me speak to the manager.
jk but like I’m not from the south so like stopping things because of less than a foot of snow is wild to me
Lmao I live 10 minutes from Durham, there’s a high chance that all classes will be off Monday including Duke, UNC, so the notification may be delayed although pretty sure they are done choosing ED people
@14wjs14 Snail mail.
I don’t see a reason why it will delay email notification due to snow storm. System sends out email based on the schedule. When I visited Duke, I saw Duke had pretty advanced tech.
I applied ED but really nervous because the interviewer and I’s schedule did not work until after the interview deadline so I didn’t get one. Will this decrease my chances of being accepted?
Could be that admissions officers who need to make final decisions on applicants can’t get to dukes campus cuz of bad road conditions or something like that
Someone on Reddit said their College Advisor called the school and they said decisions will come out on the 13th at 7 PM ET
