Duke ED Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

My son with 34 Composite, 35 Superscore, 3.98/4.0 UW, 740, 750, 770 on three Sat Subjects and 5’s on Four AP’s and one 4 on One AP, got a straight Reject! Ec’s were pretty decent too. Asian Male, should’ve learned from my next door neighbors the “Kimn”'s to use the Native American card as they got their kid in, but we have too much integrity. We’re sticking with our proud “Kim” last name. Just move on to another school who does want my hard working Asian boy at their school.

Does your neighbor have Native American roots? If not, that is shockingly unethical behavior, and they should be living in fear that they don’t get caught in the lie.

It’s tough being a white or asian male these days.

Does anyone know when admit weekend/Blue Devil Days are?

They’ll announce this month, most likely in February

Blue devil days is February 17 for ED.

You are not alone in the straight rejection with great stats. DS had a 35 ACT, all 5’s on AP’s, 800 -760 on subject tests, National Merit Semifinalist, captain of multiple sports teams, from NC, extremely rigorous curriculum, summer research projects. I am not sure what more he could have done. His recs were great too. I didn’t expect acceptance as there are lots of qualified candidates, but I was very disappointed for him to get the rejection and not even a deferral. It definitely made me question the process. After reading the book by Rachel Toor about Duke admissions, I fear he was simply classified as a “BWRK” — or boring white rich kid. Unfortunately, the only part that was correct was the white part, and that is out of his control. It is unfortunate, but they are losing out on a great kid!

Did he attend NCSSM by any chance ? There are very surprising results from Duke for SSM kids over the years, especially with high stats (white, asian). I am sure your son will have more acceptances in RD round, and find his fit.

I believe BWRK actually stands for “bright well-rounded kids” who simply do not stand out in the admission process. (Not boring, white, rich kids)

can anyone tell my chances of getting in duke

@NCKris Not NCSSM - his school is a New England school. Though I did hear NCSSM didn’t have great results this year either at Duke. @desie1, you are right, BWRK can mean Bright well rounded kid, but she refers to boring white rich kids in the book.

@powerbang: Your chances are frankly fairly slim (read: “moonshot”) given your current SAT I. I’d say retake for a better score (1450+ would be ideal).

Other than that, your ECs seem fairly strong, but not truly exceptional (though it’s hard to gauge accurately from a brief description). Best of luck!

Has anyone admitted ED been selected as a merit finalist? I know they typically go to RD candidates…

@vivliv Yes. AB Duke finalist/ED admit here.

@levers I am glad to hear that ED students were included. Good luck with the finalist weekend.

@vivliv I am a BN Duke finalist. Does anyone know if they select ED admits for the scholarships?

@BEisin I don’t know. I’d like to think, however, that once RD and ED admits become finalists, they are evaluated without giving preference to one over the other.

I was accepted ED but couldn’t attend accepted student day. I’ve heard from friends that free merch was given out during those days. Is it too weird to email them and ask about that? For anyone that did go, did they give out stuff? Duke merch is so expensive to buy…

Why not attend one of the upcoming Blue Devil Days? There is plenty of swag given out at all of them.

I emailed them and asked, but they said I couldn’t go :frowning:
