Duke Freshman Dorms

Hi! I am an incoming freshman to Duke and am in the process of filling out the housing form. I am planning to major in PoliSci or Public Policy but am also a performing arts junkie and will likely minor in Musical Theatre and/or Cinematic Arts. I was hoping to get a bit more information on Duke’s Performing Arts living community. Specifically, is it common/acceptable for non-performing arts majors to live there, and what is the general experience like?

I have also heard rumors that the Performing Arts community has a propensity towards drug use/smoking—how prevalent is that, if at all? (Asking as a non-smoker who would strongly prefer a roommate who is the same :))

Thanks!

Hello! Rising junior here, welcome to the Duke family!

First and foremost, a majority of people in the performing arts living community are not performing arts majors or minors. So if you are interested in the arts, you should totally do it! And plus they typically reside in Pegram which is quite nice!

In terms of drug use and smoking, I do not think the community is more prone than any other group at Duke so I don’t think that should discourage you unless you are VERY strong on that in which you might want to look into substance-free housing

Let me know if you have any further questions!
