how should i prepare for the duke interview?

Just had mine last week and theres not much you can do other than to relax. Maybe have a teacher you don’t know well ask you questions. Its the typical, “why duke, what do you want to do after duke, what if you didnt get in, how would your friends describe you, etc” Its really more of a conversation than an interview though. We talked about how awesome Duke is:) Just don’t freak out about it.

General interview advice: it’s very relaxed so don’t worry too much about it. Make sure you know enough about the school to say what appeals to you about it. Most interviewers will start with a generic question (“Why Duke” is almost always the start, followed by general things like interests, strengths, weakness, etc.) However, answer things honestly and let the conversation take you wherever it will. I once started talking to an interviewer about cows.

And if the interview doesn’t go great, relax. My Duke interview went horrible, and I was still admitted.

D’s question from interviewer- if you could put 5 things in a time capsule, what would they be?

Why do you want to attend Duke University?

Why did you select the major you selected?

What has been your greatest experience in high school?

What was your worst experience in the last five years?

Tell me about your involvement in extracurricular activities.

Have you had any work experience?

Which of your accomplishments are you the most proud of?

Tell me about your favorite high school teacher. What made he or she an effective teacher?

Tell me about your worst teacher in high school.

Which other schools are you applying to? (I SHOULDN’T have said UNC, i said this in an effort to emphasize my interest in the research triangle)

Considering that your parents won’t be around at college, how do you plan on buckling down come study time?

If you would meet any important figure in the present or past who would it be and what would you talk about?

What do you think is the biggest problem that your generation faces?

Keep in mind: this was MY question set and yours WILL BE altered. These are a few questions to practice with until then. The interview takes place in a very relaxed setting.
Also, have a favorite piece of literature to discuss. Don’t stress, but do practice and be able to EFFECTIVELY articulate your expressions.

Interviewers are instructed to NOT ask this question unless you bring it up…but some ask it anyways…
