Duke Parents Thread

No one has ever moved into East Campus with more stuff than “Clay Adams” is going to bring next Tuesday.

Clay Adams is Associate Dean of Students and probably the person in charge of allocating the parking passes :)

Awww. I was kind of hoping it was some poor random frosh who was going to wonder “why is all this random stuff in my room, and why does every parent laugh when they hear my name?!”

Parents find the oddest things funny, just sayin’.

I just had to talk my mother through another rendition of ‘Do you have too much stuff how are we going to do this.’ Only a little more than a week untl move-in (so…I’ll only have this conversation with her ten or twenty more times, right?)!

That’s because you DO have more stuff than Eisenhower took to Normandy, and I am NOT renting a van, so you need to start making some decisions. (In other words, we’ve had that discussion too.)

Purpleacorn- I just fedexed 90 pounds of stuff for my daughter (she’s at pre-orientation) and I’m bringing 2 suitcases for her as well as picking up stuff at bed, bath and beyond, target, officemax… You are not alone!

Yup! We’ve got four good giant checked suitcases full of my stuff (plus one full of theirs), and then some WalMart stuff (the fan! Oh, how I am going to love my fan! We will not talk about how long I spent researching my Fan.). I had a lot of the bedding/mattress pad/pillow stuff for Twin XL already, and we couldn’t justify buying new when the alternative was free checked baggage with reward tickets.

Just wondering what students usually do during the fall break in October. Do the dorms remain open if a kid isn’t going home?

Yes, the dorms are open during fall and Thanksgiving breaks but closed during Christmas.
Not sure about spring break …
Kids are on their own when it comes to food though…

Hey DukeDoc - my son will be taking your course this fall and we are trying to save some $ on the textbook. I noticed that the Duke bookstore has a “package” which includes a CD. The used books on Amazon tend to not come with CD’s. How important is it to have the CD? Would it be enough to just have the textbook? Thanks so much! We are looking forward to getting there in a few days!

Leaving for Duke in a few hours. I feel really excited ! Maybe we should have a CC meet up?

Kelowna - check your pm’s!

We’re leaving for NC tomorrow morning for a last mini-family-vacation before I’m set loose in Durham!

(And the current drama of the day is whether or not my parents are attending the 8.15A session on Wednesday morning. Mother says yes. Father asks why the heck you would.)

Good luck to all you new parents during move-in. It’s a fantastic time!! My sophmore D arrived back on campus this morning as she is a FAC and quite possibly could be carrying your lugguage to your kids dorm room…

Enjoy this special time and don’t shed too many tears!!

In case you missed it, or want to see it again, here is the link for today’s Duke Class of 2017 Convocation.

<a href=“Convocation for New Undergraduate Students - YouTube”>Convocation for New Undergraduate Students - YouTube;

Congratulations to all the new Dukies!

Greek - I looked for you yesterday, but you were not around. :frowning: Your son’s roommate and his family looked at me like I was a crazy lady when I tried to explain who I was looking for! Didn’t have another way of getting in touch. I couldn’t get into my account last night to post. I hope it all went well for you and your son!

Got back home late last night. Proudly wore my Duke shirt on the plane, received multiple warm smiles from red eyed parents at both airports  For some reason it has been comforting to know that others knew exactly what I was going through…
Met with dadof2boys and his family on a couple of occasions - it was so nice to finally see the real person behind a screen name. His son is a fantastic young man and looks sooo ready for college  Him and my own DS will be in several classes together - a comforting thought.
Duke’s campus is absolutely gorgeous. Fell in love with it instantly, already looking forward to many more visits. Durham did not seem to be scary or unfriendly at all, I think that whatever instances of crime they have had there so far could have happened anywhere.
The presentations I attended were very helpful and informational. Got goosbumps as the bells chanted after convocation…

DS was able to move in early due to participation in pre-orientation program, so we have had three full days to shop and decorate his room. It looks absolutely great for a college dorm (he even bought curtains!) and I am so happy that he is able to have such a cozy place as his home away from home . Meal plan started yesterday, looking forward to hearing from him how he enjoys the food there. Got a text last night that they attended a fabulous jazz concert in Durham. I am sure there are many incredible days ahead for our kids in the next four years. Can’t wait to see him again though :(

Too bad I was not able to meet any other freshman parents from CC this past several days. Looked for you really hard but you were elusive  GreekMana texted me from the airport in Chicago to let me know that my DS has been featured on Duke TV. I am not going to link to it, but if you search for Class of 2017 photo broadcast you will be able to see him :)

So here it is to the class of 2017. May they have fabulous four years of learning, friendship, and plain college fun ! They could not have picked a better college, and I mean it :)

Just a quick note to say my daughter appears to be adjusting to life at Duke well. She has “hit the ground running” by getting her first assignment for the Chronicle. She is writing a story on Dr. Robert Lefkowitz, and gets to interview him in the process. :)

Today was first day of classes, but S only had one class at 8:45. Guess his schedule was set up to let him just dip a toe in on the first day.

Also, Kelowna does exist in real life. Good meeting her and her son. Saw him in the video. He’s going to take the place over one day soon!

And like the rest of you with sons, I will only see photos that are tagged by girls.

Spoke to my S after his first day of classes - the 120 pages of required reading for Wed really threw him right into it! Guess party time is over! But DukeDoc99, he LOVED your class and is really looking forward to a great semester! And yes, I only see pics tagged by girls. But, on the bright side, I see that he was nicely dressed for the Nasher Art Museum party!
