I personally think I’d submit everything. All your scores are solid and it confirms that you a qualified applicant. But you should do what makes you feel comfortable. Your ACT score overall is a bit better, but your SAT score is no slouch either. They really only look at your best score anyways, but seeing other data to confirm your abilities is always a positive thing. FWIW, I submitted the ACT and my SAT IIs (never took the SAT since I did well on the ACT…). Duke LOOKS at your SAT or SATIIs even if you don’t submit the other; they just won’t accept you if you only submit one of those and not the ACT. But that doesn’t mean they throw it in the trash. All data that can give admissions officers more information about an applicant is used…to a certain extent.

Hi Alex, I actually called Duke with this same question (very similar scores as well) and got some good information. First of all, my advice is to submit the ACT and your math and writing SAT IIs. I don’t think you should dilute your brilliant ACT and SAT II math and Writing scores with your very good SAT and SAT II reading scores. (even though they are only a little bit lower). I believe that Duke honestly doesn’t give advantage to students with both SATs and ACTs reported. I think there might be an advantage to submitting both scores if they are equally good, but there is probably no advantage to submitting an SAT that lowers the strength of the ACT. And since Duke says over and over that they only need one of the tests, well, then I’d just submit the ACT. When I talked to the admissions lady, she maintained that they will look at the higher score submitted, either ACT with writing or SAT with SAT IIs. If you submit both, they will put the higher in your “file.” That being said, the very nice admissions lady told me to remember that they are still human and once they see a score, they can’t erase it from their brains. So if the ACT is high and the SAT is lower, they do use the ACT but they might remember the SAT is a little lower. If you think your test scores (both ACT and SATs) are better than your cumulative grades, you might want to submit both. But if your grades are great, just send in that great ACT. I will say this also, the Duke admissions lady said 2170 was a fine score on SATs. She said it was not a score that would detract from an applicant. I know I’ve been confusing here, but after I talked to her, I got the feeling that the best plan was to send in only ACTs. Even though she assured me that if both are in they will only consider the higher. By her saying they will only look at the higher score seemed to mean, in my opinion, that the SAT would confer no advantage. These are just my opinions.

My other advice, which is my utmost main advice, is to follow your gut instinct. I think you know the right answer for you, and that is to report them all. Every situation is different and you know the right answer for you. Remember this board is a bunch of strangers. 790 is outstanding. I also have heard recently, from a guy who makes it his profession to know these things, that colleges appreciate the honesty of submitting all the scores. They know you’ve taken SATs-esp because you are sending in those SAT II scores. Don’t be afraid to send in all your scores. I would trust your instincts.
