Duke slightly overenrolled for '11

From the Durham Herald Sun:

"More applicants take Duke offer"

"More applicants than expected have accepted Duke University offers of admission to its autumn freshman Class of 2011.

Christoph Guttentag, Duke's dean of undergraduate admissions, said the school expected the percentage of students accepting offers of admission to increase slightly this year from less than 41 percent in 2006.

The actual increase -- to about 42 percent --was greater than predicted. Instead of an estimated 1,665 students, the Class of 2011 is expected to include between 1,687 and 1,710 students.

Duke received 19,206 applications, the second highest in university history. The number of applications broke a number of admissions records, including numbers from students of color, international students, North Carolina residents and children of Duke alumni.

Duke admitted 21 percent of the applicants, the lowest "admit percentage" in its history.

In his memo, Guttentag noted that the Class of 2011 will be Duke's most diverse to date.

"A record 44 percent of the incoming class represents students of color, including 500 Asian students, 105 Hispanic students and 156 African-American students," Guttentag wrote."

so what happens for dorms? lol almost afraid to ask...

They're BARELY overenrolled, so I'm assuming there's just going to be a few more triples this year.

as in doubles being converted to triples? with 2 ppl in a 3 person room?

How could they overenroll again...

i heard though that they used the waitlist... why would they do that if they overenrolled? does anybody know how ppl many they took of the waitlist?

I'm going to guess that Duke slightly underenrolled before going to the waitlist..

I don't think dorm space is going to be a problem. I heard that last year, they had some empty spaces in a few dorms on east.

Duke lets people off of the waitlist to fill certain quotas - for example, with musicians, internationals, and URMs, if not enough enroll they let these groups off of the waitlist.

Maybe thats what happened? I figure they took atleat 30-50 off of the waitlist this year.

Waitlists are also used for yield protection purposes. If an All-Star student is on the waitlist and sends back the "Yes, please consider me" card, I really don't think Duke is going to worry about enrollment.

you guys can think what you want, but a ton of kids on CC and in my area got into Duke off the wlist. It was more than 30-50 kids, do not be fooled. Duke just brought a ton of kids off the list and then filled it around 30-50 above the normal amount to allow for summer melt.

NUGrad.. it probably was around 100-200.. a little less than the number Northwestern accepted off the waitlist.

I think that's just because the yield off the waitlists was significantly higher than they predicted.

dorms most likely wont be an issue. there were 2 people in many triple-sized rooms, as well as several empty singles this year that i personally am aware of...and im sure there will be enough to accommodate this year since the class of 2009 overenrolled to about 1700 i think and they were fine.

NUGrad, if it is true that you went to Duke for law school, why do you have such a problem with Duke.

i have nothing against Duke. I think that on this board, it is really overrated.

well on the NU board, NU would be overrated... what's your point?

I'm curious to the answer of this question too, ;)

Ah yes, NUGrad thinks Duke is an overrated Southern university full of rich white kids, and that the undergrads he met at frat parties weren't that smart...

Actually, in reality, I think NUGrad is pretty ignorant and hates facts. Look at some of his old posts. I feel like he's trolling usually.
