Duke TIP

Is anyone familiar with the Duke TIP program and how it should be reflected on the Common App (or if it should be at all). Daughter was identified and enrolled as a TIP student in the 7th grade and it has followed her since. She participated in a couple of the enrichment programs early on but as her high school tenure progressed she sort of dropped it from the things she kept up with. Is being identified as a TIP student considered an honor? If it is she would list it either under the additional info or in the #5 spot on the honors section.

No, you wouldn’t put that under honors, or even add’l info. That was pre HS, so that sort of thing could have gone on a private HS application. You would put the programs she participated in during HS on her activities list.

IF she participated at all in high school (and she can list the summer or weekend program she attended), I think she can list it. Let the admissions committee then decide how much weight they want to give it.
If she got in in 7th and then did nothing with TIP during 9-12, there would not be a reason to list it.

In the end, why not have her ask her school counselor? While TIP is selective, there are still always plenty of kids who are TIP kids at most high schools and I imagine her counselor has run up on this question before. To me it would hinge on high school involvement. But that could be wrong!

“In the end, why not ask her school counselor?”

Unfortunately, her school counselor is not helpful at all (an at times very passive aggressive), hence my inquiry here :-)

No you don’t put that on there because that was middle school not high school

Only include it in the activities section if she did a lot with it in HS (summer camps, online courses, etc.). Honors conferred in middle school are not relevant to the honors section, so definitely do not put it there or in the additional info section.
