@Lvs232643 They should always have a leg up as they put it all out there back in November and were ready to commit back then. However, at this point they are no longer obligated to commit to Duke and there’s no guarantee if accepted in the RD round that they would commit. Highly likely but they don’t have to. Regardless, when compared to a RD candidate the fact they did apply ED to begin with should give them a slight leg up in my opinion. My son only applied RD but I would think if comparable to an ED candidate the ED one should get a spot over him.

GT is one of the best for any engg. So wondering why you would consider Duke for it unless you want to double major in another area?
I got in!!!
rejected, legacy
but it’s like my fifth rejection so we used to it
Hahaha
Great question and we are still trying to weigh everything. Yes, GT is an awesome school for engineering! Between that and Michigan my son was primarily trying to decide if he wanted a school with only STEM kids (GT) or a school with all types of kids (Mich). Honestly, GT and Mich are so close engineering-rank-wise it would come down to fit. We already visited GT (pre-covid) and were planning a trip to Mich next week. We are OOS (and full pay) for both so Mich would be more expensive but I think my son may prefer the atmosphere and culture of Mich more than GT.
Now that Duke is in the mix we will definitely consider it because it is currently our best priced option. They gave us a great financial package…less than both GT and Mich. And their engineering is still ranked high enough that it would give him a great ROI.
sorry to ask such a dumb question, but how do you know if you were admitted to the pratt school of engineering or the trinity college of arts and sciences? the acceptance letter does not specify… i am a parent so i am probably missing something very basic here…
yeah i can’t see which school i got into either
If you are admitted to Duke, it is to the school you applied to, either Pratt or Trinity. They do not consider you for a different one than you applied.
“Honestly, GT and Mich are so close engineering-rank-wise it would come down to fit. ”
It should always come down to fit, not rank.
thank you! my son told me he applied to the engineering school - then, he got an email this morning welcoming him to the pratt school of engineering.
for us all are OOS and have to pay full… no financial package from any schools GT son will graduate in 3 year because of AP’s he is ready to commit to GT later today
Son accepted. 4.0 UW, 1570 SAT
Insufficient aid.
It’s surprising why Duke is so high on your list. Isn’t Berkeley higher ranked than Duke for math?
Ok, yes…I’m not sure if you’re trying to correct me here? All I meant was that because GT and Mich were ranked so similarly we weren’t putting GT on some ranking pedestal because it’s technically ranked higher than Michigan from an engineering perspective.
Someone had asked why my son wouldn’t just pick GT for engineering since it’s ranked higher than Duke. Hence my answer addressed the rank issue.
Rank does play a role, like a school ranked top 10 vs a school that ranks 40 for example. However, it should come down to fit when comparing similar ranked schools. Rank does not directly correlate to quality of education but it is an indicator of how involved the university is in research and the quality of students at that institution
