@powerbang for a “chance me” you need to provide more academic details - GPA w/uw, curriculum, AP/IB/AICE classes completed, class rank (if ranked)
No AP classes
Class rank 5 in 80 students
GPA 3.7
@powerbang If you research the 2018 Duke Freshman class profile you will see that the mid-range SAT for accepted students was 1490-1560 and the mid range GPA was 4.1-4.8 weighted. With a 7% acceptance rate, it seems they only take the top, top, top academic students. Your class rank is impressive and they do meet 100% of demonstrated need. I would imagine the stats required for all the schools you listed are similar. Good luck to you!
@powerbang Are you an international applicant? If so Duke doesn’t give FA to all international students. Duke University will meet full demonstrated financial need for a limited number of international students. Each year Duke expects to enroll 20-25 first-year foreign citizens who receive need-based financial aid and/or merit-based scholarships. There is no need-based aid for international transfer applicants.
Your stated SAT score of 1230 is very low for your targeted schools. What was the breakdown on your SAT math & SAT EBRW ?
If correct, an SAT score of 1230 is about 250 points too low for serious consideration.
There must be a mistake or your Olympiad gold metals are not as impressive as you may think if someone with a 1230 SAT score wins gold for math, and for science and for “cyber”.
Also, while big in India, badminton is not much of an asset in the US. Tennis & squash are important in the US, but not badminton.
I am baffled by the acceptance criteria. My kid has a perfect GPA with 34 ACT (35 super score) 11 APs (so far all 5s) so far logged 900 medical hours as a CNA (going premed); captain of DI sports team; NHS and other school leadership groups; Class valedictorian of top ranked school; best essay English. teacher has ever read” - app in by Nov. 1st YET DENIED? What more does it take ?
Please resist the urge to feel like your child is entitled to an acceptance solely based on (very common for a Duke applicant) stats and a subjective essay review from a teacher. College admissions is a holistic process, and there are more qualified applicants than spots available
@hope2BBadger I heard it’s easier to get in with less popular majors. The competition for premeds must have been really fierce.
I don’t think you have a great shot at any of those schools as an international student with a 1230.
However, if you win a gold medal at the IMO or place first at the Google Science Fair/Intel ISEF etc. things might be very different.
Something tells me that your gold medals at national olympiads may not be as exclusive as they seem at first glance. Are these awards won by 100s of students (example: top 5% of test takers)?
