I have already started college but am not happy with where I am currently at (at all really)
I first took the ACT about 2.5 years ago, after I finished HS. I took the test cold w/o studying since my parents squeezed me in for about 1 week before it was scheduled.
So what I'm getting at is, can I retake it and hope for transfer to a better school, or am I stuck with what I have? (a 21 :()

bump…anyone?

Bumping it one more time, I know its a weird question but I really really want to be at a better school for Political science or a solid pre-law program and feel very held back as of now.

im pretty sure u can take it again i dont think there is a age limit or anything… but i thought to transfer they just really looked at your college transcript… but of course if that isnt as good as desired a nice act will look good in addition regardless

Quick question about transferring- Since most schools require applications to be finished by March or April, how do they look at your grades for the semester you are currently in? I would be transferring in the Fall of next year and taking the ACT again in the summer.

How would schools look at this? Would I be better of taking a semester off from my current school?

edit- spelling

Would a mod mind moving this to the admissions section? I think t would be better off there

You can retake. Admissions officers will consider your best score, but as a transfer student little weight is given to standardized tests. Admissions will give the most attention to your transcript and activities after high school.

Not a problem. I took the ACT yesterday and there was a 26 year-old transfer student who did one and a half bachelors degrees who wanted to move to the states to be with his wife (I’m from Canada). You should have no issue AT ALL. Just study the stuff, because the guy told me after he was very rusty!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’ll be retaking it in February at my current school, hopefully hit a 28 or higher.

My only other worry is that my current GPA is only a 2.9, and since I need to submit my transfer info my April (May is the latest I saw) Will schools consider what my GPA will be by the end of the Spring semester or just what it is when I apply?

Bumping again to see if anyone thinks I have a decent shot at a good school. I really would like to George Washington, since I have a huge interest in politics/govt.

Schools do not see the spring semester grades unless they request it specifically after receiving your application. They do, however, look at WHAT courses you take but i believe that this is only for credit evaluation purposes.

I might just reconsider applying in the Spring now and taking some classes at a local CC that I went to before my current school. I know for a fact that I don;t want to be here any more than one more semester. We only have ONE poli sci professor and hardly any resources, plus I feel like there is little preparation being done for the real world or grad/law school.

Sorry if I just sound like I’m ranting, stress has been really high about this for a while now

The people who run the ACT will “let” you take the test while you are in college. It will depend on individual college policy how it deals with standardized tests taken in college. The general consensus on college confidential is that standardized tests matter less for transfer students than freshmen.

Some schools will ask for midterm grades, and others won’t.

How many years of college have you had? You might want to improve your GPA, because the college board reports that GW only accepted 43% of transfers. (If you don’t want to stay at your current school, you could go to a CC). The middle 50% of ACT scores for incoming freshmen are 25-30.

1.5 yrs so far, but still have about 3 to go since I only took 12 hrs my 1st semester.

I agree about the GPA part, its what is really eating me up right now. Next semester will be only about getting grades for me.

edit- fwiw I can get good LOR and write a good “Why x School” essay, if that boosts me any.

I guess adding more info about myself would be helpful :)

Home schooled until 9th grade, 10th grade was my first year in a public school. Was really rough to say in the least, but all of my teachers liked me alot

Technical school junior year, crap academics lead to me being HS again senior year. That went fine except that the state of Ohio does NOT give diplomas to home schooled students. So, I went back to the same tech school (was interested in auto body/painting atm) to get my diploma from my local HS. Was on the honor roll twice, and never missed classes and again my teachers all really liked me. Don’t really have any EC’s sadly, but I did go on a missions trip to Jamaica in 9th grade, summer camps at colleges, and a couple other things I can’t recall atm.

Took roughly 2 years off in between HS and college working a normal 8-5 in construction estimating. Decided that the family business was not what I wanted in the long run and went to a local state school (NKU). Transferred after 1 semester with 3.0 due to out-of state tuition (a joke considering I’m 10 min from KY) Then went to CC, and after 1 semester of classes I ended up at Lee University where still am.

My lack of initial interest in college and lack of planning really hurt me, and I want to make it up by finishing at a school where I can actually expand my mind and be prepared for a good law school.

I have had a bit of a rough start as you can see, mostly finding decent and mature friends and people who you can actually have intellectual conversations with…professors that don’t suck, and an environment that I enjoy.

Morning bump :)

Bumping again because I remembered a few EC’s- College Republicans at my current school, community service time, and the dorm softball team next semester.

Any other people who could offer advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

I’m interested in Emory, GWU, Dartmouth (uber-long shot but it can’t hurt)
UPenn, Duke, University of Chicago and as safeties Miami Oxford and OSU since I’m an Ohio resident

Sorry to keep bumping this thread, but is it possible for me to change the thread title to something more relative to my questions like transfer questions?

bump…anyone else?
