Retaking ACT/SAT

Is retaking the SAT/ACT worth it? I am applying for junior transfer to top notch schools. I got a 30 or 31 in high school, don't remember.

Hey xfer - your scores look within range of being competitive to most schools even as a freshmen. By your junior year, they mean so little, I wouldn't even waste your time preparing for standardized tests again. Your college GPA is going to be by far the most important piece of information the adcom will consider, so I think you're in pretty good shape already.

I agree. They wouldn't carry much weight now.

Try this one on for size,

College GPA: 3.7 (sophomore)
ACT:21

I should probably schedule a retake asap?

Well yes then. What happened?

Didn't challenge myself in high school and got left behind. I got accepted into a state university and fell in love with learning. You see where this is going...

It seems odd they would let a sophomore in college take the ACT

Well there is no age limit. I'm glad for you with the turn around. Keep the good work going!

I'm retaking it...you should have enough time to prepare over break, thats my plan!

Oink Brown,

You are in the EXACT position I am. I also slacked off in high school and hated learning. Now I have decided I want to pursue a profession in collegiate academia. I am also at a state school with a GPA of 3.8. My ACT score was also low. I plan to transfer after my sophomore year. So you all think that it would be good to retake it?

Also, if I want to attend a school in the North East, would it be better to take the SAT? Or is the ACT fine? Or both?

Thanks.

I wouldn't retake anything. A 31 is adequate and, given your junior standing, will not detract from your application at all.

What would be the cut off for not taking it again? 30?

The first step would be to check with the institution that you are applying to and make sure they will look at a test score from when your in college. I dont think there is any certain cutoff. The best way to judge if you would benefit from re taking is looking at the college or scholarship requirements; if you would be a few points (1-3 on ACT) I would consider it. That would be the best way, I think.

nineteen,

That's my plan too. I cannot wait to destroy this test, redemption will be sweet :) Unless they sit me next to a seventh grader, that could throw me off
