During summer after First year, can one consider themselves a freshman, sophomore or either?

I was wondering, what can a person see themselves as?

Usually that’s based on the number of credit hours attained. Something like 30-60 complete = sophomore.

Rising sophomore

Yep^ Rising Sophomore

I have heard of the term, but can I still see myself as a freshman though?

You can see yourself however you choose but your actual status will be dependent on the number of credits and how your school evaluates them.

Sophomore. Do alumni call themselves rising seniors? No.

At our school, 0-30 credits is freshman, 30-60 sophomore, 60-90 junior, 90-120 senior and 120+ is unofficially senior plus (those people who have earned enough credits to graduate, but have switched majors etc)

So if you have earned 30, you are a sophomore. Not “rising.”

I assume there’s some reason this matters? Some program only open to freshman?

@Mandalorian In the protocol suggested in post #2 by rising senior would be used for a student in the summer before his/her senior year. After graduation the person would become an alumna/alumnus

The “rising” is useful thing conversationally, but gets in the way of the business side of things.

I have seen some scholarships that require sophomore (or junior) status, for example. A student who has achieved 30 hours would be able to apply for these.
