Okay, so I'm at a 4 year university looking to transfer next year.
So, what are some of the clubs and things that I should look for that could help my E.C. activities?

What sort of things are you into? politics? community service? sports? anything vocational or degree/major oriented? Music?

Going out and joining a dozen random clubs doesn’t generally impress anyone but showing dedication and commitment to one or a few things you are passionate about does.

The school you are transferring to wants to know you will contribute to their community and enrich the lives of other students with your interests in activities outside of the classroom.

I have the same exact question but I’m at a CC.

@fightingillini - my same questions apply to you as well then and I’ll try to list off some examples.

Well I did play football at my junior college back in 2007. Also, I have work expierence from 2006-2007.

Does it matter how recently you have done ECs?

Well, like I said above, schools want to admit people who will become involved in the school and community outside of the classroom. If you are working a full time job then it is understood that people generally don’t have time for EC’s.

Are you able to keep involved with football or continue building your work experience, hopefully with work related to your major or the major you want to apply for with transfer?

Football is over for me simply because I just want to totally dedicate this semester to studying and getting a 4.0 gpa to raise my cumalitive gpa. I think there is a day of where all the clubs set up tables in the quad and encourage people to sign up for something in their interest. Unfortuantely, I don’t have work pertaining to my major because I don’t think anyone would hire a 20 year old programmer without a degree. I could find a job but then again I would want to spend my spare time studying because I am taking a heavy course load this semester. Pretty much make or break semester for me. I will definitely look into the ECs though and will try to get involved.

See if there is an engineering or IT related club at the school. Usuaully a CC will have a list of student orgs on their website for you to browse through. I’d also suggest talking to your programming professor or chair of the dept and see what suggestions they would have for you.

E.C.'s play a large role in demonstrating your passion for your field of study and also give you something to talk about in the transfer essays when you write about “Why transfer to study CS at ____ university?”.

You are right about club rush. That usually takes place the first or second week of the semester. Not all clubs show up to it though so make sure to check the school’s website for the complete list.

Thanks for the advice. Good idea too about talking to my CS teacher. I’ll talk to her tomorrow after class.

I’m really happy with this semester at CC; I have a good feeling about it.
