Hi, everyone
I'm wondering if it's ok to use a new e-mail address for college applications.
I've been using my old e-mail address for collegeboard, etc., so I've received lots of e-mails from colleges through the address.
Do colleges get confused if I use a different e-mail address? Is there any disadvantage for doing so?

It kinda depends on what your old email address is. In college admissions, professional communication, job hunting, etc you’ll need a professional sounding email. It’s hard to take you seriously when your email handle is “<a href="mailto:pokemonfreak930@domain.com”>pokemonfreak930@domain.com" or something similar. A good rule of thumb is to use your first initial and last name in some combo (maybe with the last two digits of your birth year). like “<a href="mailto:jdeer93@domain.com”>jdeer93@domain.com" or “<a href="mailto:deer_j@domain.com”>deer_j@domain.com"
I doubt there will be any real ramifications of switching emails if you decide to go down that route. If you use one of those “pre-filled out” applications that colleges sometimes send out in their recruitment emails you’re going to want to double check to make sure your new, professional, email is used rather than your older one.

For example, I would avoid email addresses that are cute – that would include something like peanutbutterlol. Make it easy and simple as possible, such as firstnamelastnameyearofbirth or firstnamelastnamenameofhighschool.

Both of my sons and I created dedicated e-mail accounts for college communications. It allowed us to access the accounts without violating one another’s privacy.

You should pause now to create your online/social media identity with a professional email you could use from college admissions time through young professional life. Maybe even purchase a domain name (others can advise), set up your LinkedIn account, pick a professional Twitter name/account, etc. Stake your claim on your professional identity now. Note that once you get into college, they’ll give you an email address you’ll likely have to use or link to your professional or at least appropriate-student email addy. Time put childish identify aside.

Thank you all for your kind replies. But my question was “is it ok to use a different email address when I already used my old email address for collegeboard, etc.?” My old email address looks professional but since my inbox is all messed up, I wanna create a new account only for college applications. Colleges have received the information about me (like PSAT score and my email address) through collegeboard, so I thought I might have to ask you guys first before I make another email address that I will use for Common App, etc.

peanutbutterlol for other accounts lol I always use something that looks professional. I only used peanutbutterlol for cc because my old id reveals too much info about me. In fact, I’ve used the same id for all the website, which is lastnamefirstnamemybirthdate. Thank you all for your advice though!

Yup. If the colleges you are applying to have you on their email list under the old email, contact them with the old email and ask them to update their list with your new email. That will prevent confusion.
