Hello.

I have not posted on these forums in years (probably since 2004 when we had two applying!) and come now with a question raised by our son, an EA applicant to MIT. He was told that his interview was waived when he submitted his application and his online account reflected this. He actually emailed the office to see if it was possible to travel to interview, but the closest EC they could find was 5 or more hours away. Today he logged onto MYMIT only to find the status of his interview boxed unchecked and a local EC listed. He is not certain when this changed (for sure sometime after the EA deadline) and did call MIT admissions about this. The person who answered the phone was not very helpful in directing him other than to tell him that if he was deferred EA he could then interview.

His question is if there is any way to determine if the admissions committee was aware that his interview was waived up until the EA interview deadline, and if there is anything he can do now (at this late date) to make sure this was known.

Thanks for any "words of wisdom"
Ellen

I would suggest emailing Amy Perez (one of the assistant directors of admissions I think): amyperez@mit.edu

She's usually pretty quick at responding to emails, and was even able to find out if my optional material made it into my folder after I had called and was told that my application was in the reading stages.

Or you might try to call MIT and ask to speak to an admission officer. I've never done that before at MIT, but that's usually what you have to do for other schools.

good luck!

If the change in information was very recent, which it sounds like it was, the admissions committee probably sees that the interview was waived.

Wow, I appled EA this year also and the same EXACT thing happened to me, except the info. appeared for me in mid-November and so I did the interview anyway. As for your situation, it is way too late to have an interview to be considered for EA (I think they make final decisions TODAY!). Yeah, I agree with molliebatmit that the admission committee when reviewing at the time probably saw that the interview was waived.
So, just wait and see what happens. If your son is deferred, then he can go ahead and get the interview done to be considered for the Regular Round. If he gets accepted, then no problems...
