EA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

@miningengineer Anyone with a 32 on the ACT and a 3.5 g.p.a. gets an automatic full-tuition scholarship to Alabama or Ole Miss, among other schools (Ole Miss only requires a 3.0). Alabama gives eight semesters that can be used for graduate or undergraduate work. Given that my son will be entering with 50-60 DE and AP credits, that’s a pretty nifty feature. Alabama also allows OOS students to use their full award toward study abroad, so that comes to around $27,000 per year or $13,500 for a semester. I think my son has a chance at a full or nearly full ride at Ole Miss, but we live here and that’s not a bonus for him.

Georgia is the better school in our opinion, and the accounting program has been ranked very well, although for some reason it is missing from the U.S. News rankings this year. Son got a direct admit to the Terry Business school, which would let him start taking business courses right away. Oh well, we will see what happens. Perhaps a miracle will happen and the Ramsey will come through, although as I said earlier I would think he would have gotten a full OOS waiver if he were in the running for that.

@EarlVanDorn

Firstly, congratulations to your son. A full scholarship with study abroad paid for is something that is a huge bonus. It’s very commendable that your son got into Terry, but I don’t think its worth it without your family being able to bring the costs down to ~18K ish without loans (bearing in mind most of his classmates will be paying minimal tuition and expenses). Accounting is a great major, but even our other schools in GA (like GSU) are known to have strong accounting programs.

50-60 DE credits changes the game slightly. That means (like you said) he can start taking Business courses right away (and hopefully he knocked out all the cores). Still, UGA OOS tuition is pricey. Is he considering graduate school? There are some great ways of attending MBA programs and such for free (at schools like UGA even), and getting the Terry name on his resume somehow.

Please keep us updated. Your sons stats are very impressive and his choices are all good. So it’ll be interesting to see how all works out.

Congrats to you and your son once again.

@miningengineer My son is considering grad school, and is interested in Chicago. We visited and both of us fell in love with it, but even with merit aid, which they offer, the tuition was just out of our reach.

He is currently taking Intermediate Accounting at Ole Miss, and the dean (his teacher) is encouraging him to stay there. My gut feeling is that he could get a full ride plus some spending money, but he really doesn’t want to attend school where we live, as in three miles to the campus. But I agree that Georgia is probably not worth paying $20,000 more a year for.

Gonna have to get the kid a decent car.

@EarlVanDorn That’s a pity that your son doesn’t want to stay at Ole Miss. To get spending money is a huge thing. He can easily attend UGA for free for an MBA in two or so years when he finishes his Bachelors.

For example, looking at your sons stats, I can see him being very competitive to an Accounting MBA program at Terry. Terry offers Graduate Assistantships for MBA students, this is directly from their website:

A graduate assistantship not only reduces the cost of your education, but also provides income to help cover your living expenses. The benefits include:

Tuition reduced to $25 per semester
40% of student health insurance premium paid by UGA
A monthly stipend for working 13 hours per week in the Terry College of Business.

For the 2016–2017 academic year, the annual assistantship stipend per MBA will be $9,175 ($917.50 per month for ten months).

Approximately the top one-third of the incoming class are awarded assistantships.

If you’re son can hold a 3.8+ which he is already doing, there is no reason for him not to be in that top third.

If he is dominating (as he seems to be) at Ole Miss, then there is no reason to make a switch which may end up bringing down his GPA. The main thing here is that he knows and has (as I gather from your post) impressed the Dean to a certain extent. This will go a LONG way in grad school admissions.

I encourage your son to stay at Ole Miss, keep that GPA up, get some strong extracurriculars (and maybe TA or Research expereince), and do an internship. Try to come to UGA as a grad student. Trust me, it may seem like bad advice now to miss out on UGA, but he will thank me in two or so years.

Your son is on an impressive trajectory, I hope that he will make the best use of it.

Best wishes to him.

@miningengineer Thank you for your kind words. My son is certainly considering Ole Miss. The campus is full of children of people I know. Willie Morris once said that “Mississippi is not so much a state but rather a club,” and certainly there are advantages of staying put, not the least of which is the fact that I figure he has a shot at a full ride, but also the fact that this is our home state.

The Alabama scholarship is also pretty sweet, even though it only covers tuition. It has the advantage of rolling over into grad school.

So in light of those, I agree that Georgia with a 50 percent OOS waiver isn’t a good choice. But it’s probably my son’s top pick right now, if money wasn’t an issue. But I’m sure he will do well wherever he lands.

How do u calculate for UGA Weighted GPA?

When is the foundations fellows decision being released?

@EarlVanDorn I have students at both schools- one studying Engineering at Alabama and one at UGA. Both are fantastic schools, but I would not pay the difference to attend UGA. When my son graduated HS, we were living out of state so the GA schools were not an option for him. We are in-state for UGA (although my DD was admitted OOS as we moved to GA for senior year). She had an ACT of 33 and was a NMF and we did not get any scholarship offers from UGA (she does have Hope and Zell though). It was hard to turn down the significant money from UA, but UGA was her dream school so we let her do it.

I agree with @miningengineer and would look at Terry for grad school. Of course, with all of those credits, you will have a lot of tuition paid for Grad school at Bama too! We didn’t visit Chicago, but one of my daughters best friends is playing basketball there this year and loves it. But it would be hard to turn down full-tuition to go there! Best of luck to y’all. If you decide on Bama, please join our UA parents FB page. We have over 3300 members now and it is a wealth of information!

Indeed. Most students at UGA at paying in-state so it may feel bad to be a student who is paying so much when all of your classmates are paying hardly anything.
