EA Decisions thread

To help stop the spread of false information ...

This last year there were two Lingles awarded. In previous years there was only one.

The Lingle is a full ride plus $7500 a year.

Last year, six full rides and six full tuitions were given, which is a lower number than in previous years. [This is according to a friend of mine who was on the admissions committee.] Of course, not everyone who gets an Axline will accept it, so it's not strictly a "percentage" of the incoming class.

Axlines are indeed offered a SURF their prefrosh year.

In the past Mr. and Mrs. Lingle with come to campus every year, and the Lingles will joint them and the president for lunch.

Really? Who did you hear this from? (I'm not saying you're lying or anything like that, I'm just curious.)

er.. anyone?

So it looks like they are not sending any axlines early this year. Darn, I have to think of something else I want for Christmas. ;)

I can only said this happen during 90s. I heard this from my son, he was a Lingle.

How about a nice, fat, acceptance package instead?

That will definitely suffice.

I think my son got in EA. Received an envelope today from Caltech 9.5x12.5 -don't want to open it and ruin his fun. Can't imagine it to be a deferral in such a big envelope. Can't wait for him to come back from school ! We live in NJ.

Congrats Num83r5! Was it sent priority mail?

No. Looks like first class mail to me. Mailed on 11th from zip 91125

i am happy for you. Do you know what time of the day they mailed it.

Doesn't indicate time on the package. Postage is $1.59

Well thank you. You should be proud of your sun. Caltech is the best place to be for a genuine genius.

Our mail man didn't come today. How weird is that? We always have mail!

[] GPA: Homeschooled (4.0 in college classes)
[] Rank: 1/1
[] AP/IB scores: None.
[] AMC12/AIME/USAMO: Nope.
[] Research: A paper in finite free resolutions, mentor said it’s good enough to be published in a decent journal. Siemens semifinalist.
[] Courseload: Normal non math/science stuff at home. JC and University classes I‘ve taken:
Math: Single and Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Number Theory, Analysis, Abstract Algebra. Physics: All based on multivariable calculus/vector analysis: Mechanics, Thermodynamics; Electricity and Magnetism; Modern Physics: Relativity, Quantum Mechanics; Physics Research Seminar(senior project). I am going to take some more advanced algebra and analysis this year.
[li] Other stats: [/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I liked them. One standard I love Math essay. One about a sport I invented: tree hopping.
[] Recommendations: One from a math professor I’m good friends with; we actually hang out together sometimes, last summer he mentored me in a research project, I took a reading course from him-you get the idea. Others, my analysis prof(I got a 96 in his class-nobody else got over a 90), youth pastor, and Mom.
[li] Hook (if any): Apparently none.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] School Type: Homeschooled.
[] Gender: M
[li] Major strength/weakness: Advanced math and science classes, good teacher recs, research/ No AMC12/AIME/USAMO.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars listed on app: Keyboard in a band, lots of sports, tutoring, coordinate the AV department in my church, leader in a scouting type program.
[] Summer Activities: Research, work in Uncle’s greenhouse business.
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: Besides the fact that you have to be amazing to get in, probably the lack of a major hook, I only got semis in Siemens and didn’t even take AMC12/AIME/USAMO(by the way, is it too late for that?).
[] What's your favorite flavor of pie? Apple.
[*] Other thoughts: I’m frustrated, it’s going to be a long wait, but I’m glad I applied EA- I get a second chance.[/ul]

oh wait...that might explain it.

neah, I stand no chance...
=(

Deferred???
Is homeschooling really that big a detriment? Your app seems amazing to me!

i'm rooting for you zeta

zeta(3), I was betting you'd be accepted. Good luck in the Regular round.

BTW, I don't think Caltech would defer someone just on the basis of coming from a nontraditional background, particularly if he/she has such a strong college record.

Man, admissions must be getting harder these days...
