can’t seem to edit posts, but i also got a 2500$ a year scholarship for anyone that was interested in that. Just trying to provide more information, i personally like to read others acceptances, so im just giving back haha.

i still haven’t heard back yet, i’m starting to get a little worried… it’s tough to feel hopeful after you got deferred from 2 colleges so far, but i’m keeping good spirits!

i applied early action the last week of october for communications.

my stats:
GPA: 3.3 UW, 3.55 W
SAT: 1730 M: 660 CR: 520 WR: 560
Top 26-30% in my class

-Varsity cross country captain, sportsmanship award, National Girls and Women in Sports Day school representative
-Student government
-4 years of community service
-Ice skating instructor for 2 years
-Took part in founding a non-profit pen-pal organization for local elementary school students

-I included information about a disruptive sleep disorder I had last year

@runnergirl15: I haven’t heard anything either. I’m calling them if I don’t get anything on Monday.

@ benellis- I actually called them too (3 days ago) haha the admissions woman seemed very apologetic for the wait… ohhh the waiting… i hope that we hear back soon!

does anyone happen to know how competitive the communications program is?

Just an observation: UMass gives many of its $5k scholarships to OOS students, probably because it is more attractive for them to do so particularly because UMass’s cost would still be $5k more than IS tuition.

I haven’t heard of any in-state students receiving any merit upon acceptance. Most of the in-state kids that I know of have the full tuition Adams Scholarship, which covers around $1700 per year, and is awarded based on MCAS (Massachusetts assessment tests) scores.

My S got a $1000 Dean’s Scholarship, which is merit-based, in addition to the Adams Scholarship.

His stats were really good though - 1550/2220 on the SATs, 4.4+/4.0 weighted GPA, etc.

It is a little disturbing as a MA resident to see all the large merit scholarships going to OOS students, but it is UMass’s stated goal to increase the number of OOS students, and sweetening the pot for them is one way to do it. Even with the $5k, it’s still $7K+ more expense for OOS, so UMass still gets some extra cash.

good news is my D got accepted!!! bad news she has to go in undeclared, not to her choice…hence, we’ll pass…

for me it just updated the acceptance on their website also, so i would think that for others it will too

I just went on the web site and my son is deferred. His Stats are
M 690
CR 580
W 580
GPA 3.4
From NJ
No Hooks
GPA was our problem due to poor performace in freshman year. His Jr. and Sr. SPA is 3.75, but I guess that didn’t matter.

@ donna54

if you don’t mind me asking, what major did your son sign up for and are you in state or out of state?

General Engineering and Out of State

i love how its hard to type out “son” and “daughter.”

And what exactly is directors award?
I got like a 2500$ directors scholarship and then i got a letter saying “yay gratz you got a Director’s Award.” Im guessing its the same thing? There is like zero information in that letter and on the website.

Son was deferred. The letter suggested sending additional supporting documentation (besides 2nd quarter grades). I’ll suggest to son that he get an additional recommendation and write a letter to the dean explaining why UMass is a good fit. However, not sure son will actually do this…he just wants this process over with. Has one acceptance to U. Southern Maine. Deferred everywhere else…3.0, from VA.

Have other early action people not heard yet. My son applied early September and has still not received a decsion,

@ mbljets-- I’m in-state- applied in October for communications and still haven’t heard yet either. I’m really anxious, but then again they have around 9,000 EA apps to review! I hope we both hear back soon, though. Best of luck!

when i called admissions last week they said all early decisions should be going out by the end of December. They said no rhyme or reason as to which ones go out early but my son is definitely anxious not having heard yet.

They’re giving meritaid to OOS students?! How is that fair? UMass is expensive as it is (they may say 20k but with extra fees they manage to sneak in, it equals about 24k). Is there any way I can petition for more aid? Seriously, I got more merit aid at a higher ranked U…

How is THAT fair? how about because they charge much more tuition for OOS students then in-state…

Accepted from MA for communications!
