EAers--Why will you be accepted/deferred/rejected?

I stole this from the Stanford board, who stole it from a board who stole it from a board... so let's just say it's a good idea and props to the person who thought of it.

I'll be:

Accepted: I'm a female physics major from a region that hasn't had someone get accepted to MIT in about three years. I've got great test scores, good grades, and I generally match every other applicant in stats. Not only that, but I'm strong in both "tested" areas (I have a quad of perfect scores in English... 800, 800, 36, 36) so I will boost their English stats and will be an asset to their Humanities programs, as well as the arts (I'm a dancer, singer, actress). I sent in the wrong word file when I sent my online app in, so I sent them a really risky note explaining my essay that I think makes me stand out.

Deferred: Nothing too bad, nothing too good. I don't have any major accolades (NO research), I don't come from a really famous prep school, my parents aren't MIT alumns. Basically anything that would make them snatch me up right away isn't really present. I'll be one of those people they debate about until the last second in March/April, then accept with a 5-4 vote on the basis of my personality and potential, not my proven intellect and previous work. (Bwaha, p's.)

Rejected: I sent in the wrong word file when I sent my essay in, so they might just say, "WTF. Thousands of other kids managed to give us the right essay. Even if you sent us the correct one, we read the first essay first and it's all filled with grammar errors and stupid sentences." Also, my math scores are LOWER than my English scores, and the only 3 B's I've gotten in high school are in Math classes (freshman and sophomore year... Calc I aced, though). (Why? I slacked off, and you CAN'T do that in the classes I took. I figured I was really good at math, so I didn't have to do homework--which is never collected. The only grades in the classes are test grades, about five or six each quarter, and each time there would be ONE test that I would mess up on, and a B was the result. I would get an A on one quarter, a B on the other, and a B on the impossible finals. My teacher doesn't do percentages... actually one semester I would've gotten an A, but she just says, "Two B's and an A. That makes a B for the semester." Haha, I'm such a whiner.) Also, like I said, I don't have any research and I don't have any national recognition.

Anybody else? Feel free to get as "life-story"ish as possible.

Great thread!

I'm a white male with professional parents. Basically, I'm screwed.

My english scores are substantially better than math, and always have been, strangely. I've got this innate verbal ability ... I'm good at math, but it doesn't come as naturally as the language arts, and it isn't really my favorite subject. I'm one of the computer science folks with a verbal brain, not a math brain ... :(

I live in the middle of nowhere in the Southwest, and I'd be extremely surprised if anyone has ever been accepted to MIT in my town. I know for a fact nobody at my school has ever gone to a top 25 school or anything.

Hopefully others will be more verbose.

FOLLOW THE FORMAT LSA.

I'm kidding. But I know what you mean about the whole verbal thing... as WELL as the whole "white with professional parents" thing. But it's good that no one in your area has EVER gone to MIT... that's a plus.

sorry :D

I really doubt any of us will be outright REJECTED in December... with that said, I've been out of school for a couple years and my science score is pretty awful. If I'm rejected next month, it will be because of that.

Yeah. If I'm rejected it will be because of my essay thing.

and here i was, thinking i was the only one applying to mit with a high verbal and a lower math ;-)

but i already spent too long thinking about it... i think rehashing my thoughts here would just be painful, lol.

i was in total shock when my verbal was higher than my math, so i think i should join that club.

Accepted: I, too am a white female, probably going into physics, which I guess makes me a minority. I have good test scores, so I'm not worried about that, and I have won some pretty prestigious awards. For instance, I was named Wisconsin Leader of the Year, and got to attend the Town Meeting on Tomorrow in St. Louis. Also, I'm a NM semi-finalist, co-editor-in-chief of my school's newspaper, exec board member of key club, and ranked 8th of 304. But all that stuff is pretty standard, if I get in, I'm going to blame my gender and race.

Deferred: Like I said, most of the stuff I do is pretty standard, and I have't had any research experience either. I really have no idea how good my essay was, I mean, I thought it was clever, but then again I sent it in, so who knows.

Rejected: No research, no science/math extra-curriculars, etc. I played high school like I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up, and now that I'm positive I want to go to MIT I kind of wished I had done things differently.

Accepted: Two summers of research, president of my school, state cabinet position in jsa, 4 years varsity tennis, pretty unique - am in a professional rock/ska band, play a million instruments, great SATs, 5 5's and 1 3 on APs, hospital volunteering...

Deferred: Indian from NJ...decent rank (18/540)...no crazy cool awards (all i have are stuff like Nat'l Merit Semifinliast, Columbia Univ Science Honors Program, blah)...

Rejected: Indian from NJ...

Hey anijen21!

I didn't know there was another Wisconsinian who wanted to go to MIT!
Although I'm a juinor i'm looking into things.
What school do you go to?
I go to nicolet

hey! I go to Brookfield Central. There's at least four kids applying to MIT from my school, 3 of which are applying early. That's a lot more than I thought there would be.

Haha, I always drive really close to Nicolet whenever I pick up my sister from UW-Milwaukee. Actually, I went to the MIT information night at Nicolet.

Small world, I guess

Accepted--My extracurriculars--I'm heavily into Science Olympiad, NSB, NOSB. Either that or my gender, female, or the fact that I want to go into geology. Most of my other stuff is pretty run-of-the-mill for application

Deferred--What can I say? My scores are pretty much the same as you-all's, no special research or anything. There's a kid at my high school (a junior) building a nuclear reactor in his garage, so, nothing crazy like that

Rejected--my history class wasn't very rigorous last year--got closed out of Western Civilization. Also, the english and math grades could be better...overall, a lower GPA than I would want. MIT also doesn't want "run-of-the-mill" people. Plus, I'm from white suburbia, with nothing like CTY or anything to show for it.

Accept: Asian/white female. No one from my school has gone to MIT in probably over 10-15 years (usually Cornell is the best school anyone can get into). Research experience last summer (365 hours)- and I had the professor I worked with write me a recommendation. Four 5's on APs. SAT score>1500. 6 perfect scores on NY state regents exams. NY math league- state qualifier. Chem olympiad-National exam qualifier (tied for 3rd place regionally). Youth symphony-1st violin, etc.

Defer: No major awards, no leadership (I'm kind of quiet), average scores, my essay was a little impersonal/technical (but I sent another for section 14 discussing my goals and personal values). OK teacher recs

Reject: grammar errors in the first essay I sent (but I sent another later that was fixed). SAT II Literature: 620 :-(
