EA'ers why will you be accepted/deferred/rejected?

I stole this from the Upenn board, who stole it from Columbia, who stole it from Yale.

Just basically list the reasons why you think you will be accepted, deferred, or rejected.

I'll go first

Admit: I'm from the North East, got AP national scholar with nine 5's and one 4, got semifinalist for Westinghouse, did internship for three years, involved in a lot of clubs

Defer: Nothing special at national level, no sports, some leadership but not outstanding

Reject: I'm asian and I don't stand out in anyway

Admit: First Generation College Student/Immigrant/blue collar background, a lot of leadership, very strong backing from a pretty famous/infamous (depends what side of the political spectrum you're on) and large public school
Defer: Scores are decent, but nothing amazing, Extracurriculars are not on a national level or a regional level, didnt get the much needed 4.0 GPA
Reject: No awards or much national/regional recognition

An interesting idea!!

Admit: Show a strong passion for one activity - don't lack in other aspects though (grades, sats, etc.).. essays were unique (and I'm told they're entertaining as well).

Defer: Over-emphasis of passion might be read as being "one sided," have revised main essay and wish I could send in the new version! No national recognition. Certain parts of my app (i.e. Student Body President) aren't majorly unique among Stanford applicants. School only ranks by decile, even though I'm in the top 2%.

Reject: Reasons from "Defer" + From a school/state with a TON of Stanford applicants (AZ), so most people don't get accepted. Hoping for at least a deferral though!!

Wow this is an awesome idea

Admit: adcom on a lot of crack
Defer: adcom drunk
Reject: adcm remotely sober

lol just kidding!

Admit: learned english in the last 4 years - several state awards - extremely high rank (top 0.25%) - EPGY multivar calculus classes - high dedication to one EC - only person applying EA from high school (1500 seniors)
Defer: low verbal (700) and writing (720) - no sports - average recs and essays
Reject: defer + lacks passion - only a few leadership positions - not standing out

Admit: highest GPA in a school with most rigorous courseload available that typically sends about five of roughly ninety students to stanford each year, white female with strong background in math/science, essays that are very "me" that are hopefully interesting, 2 years of research, 3 really strong recs, one from my physics teacher (top in my career type), one from my calc teacher who got a BA, MA, and PhD from Stanford that will be very strong, quite possiby another top in my career type (my current math teacher claims that basically he can just say "this girl should get in" and it happens, hope he's right!), plus another strong rec from a stanford prof who taught a topology class I took over the summer at stanford
in short: #1 in class + math/science girl + 3 great recs = admit?
Defer: no awards on the national level, 1 of 8 applying EA, ECs are average to good, but not incredibly amazing, they might not love my essays
Reject: I'm going to pretend this isn't possible...

Admit: valedictorian, high boards (3880), dedication and strong leadership in 3 main EC's (Co-Captain/MVP in Track and XC, hold 6 school records, Editor in Chief of nationally recognized school newspaper), co-founded and succesfully managed my own business (a fence-building company), and I'm half Argentine...I don't think they have many of those.
Defer: No nat'l awards, unless you can count National Hispanic Recognition Program Finalist...
Reject: One of my teacher recs may turn out to be really bad....who knows...

Admit: Int'l Taiwanese student from Philippines (gotta work that diversity thing), EPGY QM and number theory, only student applying from small Christian HS. rank 4/107 W4.29 GPA, 4year Track.

Defer: Mediocre SAT:1470, no BIG ec, 120hr com.service, little AP's

Reject: no-one in the history of my school has ever made it to HPYS. I think the best was UCLA and USC (both football or somekind of sport scholarships). The rest go to community college or the Fire Academy T.T

Admit: No class rank, but my GPA was highest last year at a v competetive prep school with a very rigorous schedule, female science lover w/ two summers of research experience - one summer of neurology animal research, one of genetics research/ huge chem nerd ( ;) ) - 800 Chem SAT II/ won the school's science prize, founder and pres of active politics club, 4 year tutor for disadvantaged kids and also 2 yr chem tutor, co-captn of varsity cross country team, newspaper editor, religious youth group. All in all "well rounded" plus amazing recs

Defer: No real national awards, no published research, math sat I too low (730 vs 770 verbal)

Reject: Didn't really do anything anyone hasn't

Admit: Some state and regional awards/recognition, great recs, really rigorous cirriculum, pretty interesting essays, had pretty unique experiences/circumstances, girl strong in math/science, took multi vari calc at local college, varsity letters, captain, pretty good leadership, graduate level research, published a paper

Defer: Not recruited, no national awards, didn't do science fair, don't know if I showed my passions well through essays, don't know if they'll like one of my essays, mostly don't stand out enough

Reject: low verbal and writing scores. English not 1st language, but too bad there's no excuse for that.

I really don't think standardized tests are as important as you guys seem to think they are. They just complete the picture. High test scores just help reinforce the rest of the application. 700 on a test is NOT low. Adcoms know that 1) the test reflects your work on just one Saturday that 2) the collegeboard says your scores are only accurate within 30 points (so a 730 could be a 700-760 depending on the version of the test you took) and therefore 3) even a difference of 50 points is really not that big of a difference! Especially on SAT I math where 30-40 points could be lost by getting just one question wrong. So then a difference of 30 points on average for all the SATs isn't really that big of a difference. I'd say an average of 40+ points difference is the point where it is statistically significant. But with a student who got 770s on all the tests and one who got a 720s on all the tests, I'd say that their scores are close enough that the decision between the two applicants would be based on other parts of the application. I didn't get why they made such a big point of the testing not being that huge of a factor, but now it makes sense.

yes but if you have a score not over 700, it may be a problem, although grades can back this up but still, it'll just look really bad since everyone's getting like 750+ on like every test

One score below 700 won't kill you. If ALL of your scores are below 700 and most people are actually averaging 770 or so on these tests (which is not the case), but it could make a difference. But I still really don't think it would keep you out, unless you were very borderline already and they were looking for reasons why they should reject you.

accept: scores(3800), siemens semi, national merit semi, a few papers here and there, ive been going to college for last 2 years...dont ask and im not a transfer student

defer: no leadership except for a club i created, no imo, no ioi, no usamo, no bio olympiad, no chem olympiad, no science olympiad, no isef, no ists (yet), no state science fair crap, no regional science fair crap, no international science fair crap, no amc10 scores, no amc12 scores, no family members from stanford, no money, no non-asian (hence, i am asian), no minority, no egpy, no rsi, no nasa summer something, no 1600, no volunteering for 1000000 hours, no work experience, no football, no basketball, no tennis, no track, no sports, no inventions, no patents, no dancing, no theatre, no cheerleading, no handicap, no wheelchair, no acting, no filming, no violin, no piano, no musical talent, no <insert here=""></insert>

reject: im gay ...sorta

I thought I had a semi-decent chance til i read your reasons for admit, but here i go.

Admit-3.95 gpa, supercompetitive college prep school, 3770 boards, show interest specifically in math and science with As in all classes and 800 on all SAT and SAT2s, some unique extracurriculars

Defer-no published work, not recruited, not spectacular essays compared to others, probably not outstanding recs, no real committment to one activity, no continued leadership status, not hardest curriculum (2 APs per year instead of 3), no company of my own, no research on cardiovascular neurophysics, no national merit anything, asian, much more qualified people applying EA from my school

Reject- Probably in bottom percentiles when it comes to extracurriculars and significant awards, said something dumb to an admissions officer when i was there, only in top 20 percent of my class of 36 (only 3 people are top 10 and theyll end up at harvard/princeton/mit)

lets just say that after reading this thread, there is no way i am going to be accepted.. poo

Admit: Well-balanced -- ECs, academics, music, leadership, etc. Pretty good essays and recs IMO
Defer: 1600 on SAT but slightly lower SAT II's, low class rank compared to most that will apply. Not enough national awards/unbelievably achievements, etc.
Reject: About the same reasons as being deferred, just depends on how glaring the inadequacies are to adcoms.

based on what i wrote on this thread, can anyone rate my chances?

Admit: Midwesterner with 1600, 3920 boards, straight As, good community service for past 10 years, involved in Science Olympiad, many awards

Defer: One cheesy essay, one quirky essay, one rambling essay (I don't suppose that counts as well-roundedness? ;)), recs could be poor

Reject: Very little leadership, scores without personality

Admit: good test scores (3970), siemens regional finalist, great ec'swith leadership, patents, good recs?

Defer: they would want to see if my senior year grades improve, decent essays

Reject: grades a little low (3.8), and no sports

needhelp06 how many B's do you have (9-11 grade)?
