To clarify what Gumbymom said about high stats kids getting admitted early. That’s not quite true.

We have a young friend who was just admitted this week with a 1740 SAT and a 28 ACT, and something like a 3.83 GPA u/w-not sure what it is weighted, but student had two APs through junior year.

My son has a 2230 SAT and a 3.95 u/w (something like 4.54 weighted for SDSU) and he’s heard nothing.

So no, not all high stats kids are getting admitted early.

Our young friend is Hispanic, my son is not, fwiw.

I’m very worried I will be denied considering students with eligibility index scores 10 points higher than mine were accepted and my admission status still reads pending. Does SDSU super score the ACT btw?

@sbjdorlo please keep in mind that your sons EI is calculated based upon his CSU GPA. So, “your young Hispanic friend” probably has better stats. All of the top cal states play some version of this game to artificially increase admissions stats and selectivity ratings.

Really? Unless you reviewed the total application you don’t know for sure what the EI is… I actually needed calculated out various CSU admissions scoring protocols for my own two kids (I had access to their entire app).

@sbjdorlo: Being Hispanic is not a consideration since California publics banned affirmative action. What will make a difference is the major. SDSU will take the highest EI for each major and starting accepting until the slots are filled. What is this “friends” major?
FYI: My niece was just accepted into Cal Poly SLO ED with a CSU GPA 3.4 (unweighted 3.0) and ACT of 30 but she applied as an Earth Science major with a 66% acceptance rate.

@sbjdorlo: ME is the most applied Engineering major at SDSU. Here is a link to show the # of applicants vs acceptances for all the majors at SDSU and you can calculate the acceptance rate from last year. My younger son applied for CS last year with good stats and did not hear until Feb. It sounds like he is an excellent applicant and should have no problem getting in. Good Luck to him.

Gumbymom, my friend did tell me that her son applied undeclared engineering, so I think your’e right about getting in early being based on major.

I did know that ME is the most applied major. Since SDSU isn’t a favorite of either of ours and ME is probably the only interesting major there besides music, he might as well go for it. It’s the only Cal State school (or maybe SLO?? Can’t remember) that he applied to ME. Not sure he really is an engineering kid, though.

Rather than checking on the friends stats, maybe you and your son should double check CSU mentor to make sure his class work is entered correctly, with critical attention to a-g. Also check the rest of the app for accuracy as all the data points are complied electronically.

@sbjdorlo what are you talking about? How is SDSU “not a favorite” with “no interesting majors”? have you ever spent a day there? best damn day you’ll spend
