Anyone else? Also, I heard that they will rejoin your application once you send in your 7th semester and that you don't necessarily wait with regular decision applicants. Not sure if it's true though.

Did you get deferred? I still haven’t heard

Yeah… Although it isn’t a rejection, it certainly feels like one. Hopefully everything will go well in the spring. Best of luck to you! I’m sure you’ll be fine! (:

That’s a bummer, but there is still a chance. We still haven’t heard, but it seems like the people finding out later are either deferred or rejected.
How did you find out? Snail mail? MyPAW?

I found out through snail mail. My MYPAW would have updated yesterday if I got admitted or rejected, but is still under review because I’m technically under review until April. Best of luck to you all! It seems as thought a lot of spots were taken by film students. I just find that interesting.

No doubt…many film students!
Hang in there…where is your plan B school?

Stacy, did you apply for film? My daughter applied for film production and still hasn’t heard anything. What confuses me, is whether those who are deferred or rejected, can still be admitted to the university in another program. I know at other schools, they can be admitted as General Studies. Does anyone know if that’s true at LMU?

mrssoffell - Before applying to the film school early action, I emailed the admissions office with this same question. They replied to me with the following:
“Unfortunately, if you are not admitted to the major you apply for, then we are not able to consider you for the other major unless you appeal our admission decision and acknowledge that you would enter LMU under a different major.”
I hope this answers your question!

Thank you Jenny! Yes, that helps. Did you attend a summer film program? Wondering if you know my daughter. We unfortunately did not get her letter of rec in in time to upload to the common app and didn’t realize until too late that she still could have sent it in.

mrssoffel - i did actually! i went to a filmmaking camp in new york for new york film academy…

Jenny, Oh, that’s great! My daughter went to one on the west coast. Congratulations on your admittance to LMU and the honors program!

My d received deferral letter in today’s mail for Film Production. Already accepted to Emerson for Film Production but really had her heart set on LMU’s program.

Sorry to hear that, but I bet she still has a very good chance to get in. We haven’t received a letter yet, but fully expecting it today. That will be at least three of us here who were accepted at Emerson and deferred at LMU. I looked back at last years messages about deferrals and it sounds like the process was much the same as this-- some not knowing until the last minute, some who had to call and find out they were deferred. Someone said LMU has a lot of deferrals because they are worried about having to deny good candidates in the second round. If you can find that thread, your daughter might feel better about it. Can I ask what made LMU her first choice? Have you visited the Film Department? Feel free to send me a private message (you have to have 15 posts to send or receive a pm).

@mrssoffel… will try to send you a private message if I get 15 posts. In the meantime, yes, we visited the film departments at LMU, Chapman and Emerson as well as some of the NYC schools. Internship opportunities and location to the film industry put LMU up top.
Also waiting on Chapman which should come out in late January.

S14 applied to Chapman as well. We didn’t have an opportunity to visit Emerson, but are planning to attend the “Picture Yourself at Emerson” day in February. Do you know when the RD is completed at LMU?

@mrssoffel - does that mean you didn’t receive my PM since you didn’t have 15 yet at that point?

Deferral letter says all decisions will be made by April 1st. We will also be attending “Picture Yourself at Emerson” in Feb. They get to attend classes which will be great. The equipment there is impressive. We had visited in July and the kids were not there. It’s a must to visit when the kids are present. Very different setting because it is a city setting with Boston Commons right across the street. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

So were a majority of film students deferred?
I’m hoping to major in screenwriting and was just wondering if i still had a chance of getting in…

I thought it was the opposite, that many of the early action spots were taken by film students. At least that is what I saw as the common trend

Did anyone else apply for business administration?

I found this post from a couple years ago:

"Regarding getting accepted after being deferred, yes you all still have a very good chance. Those that get accepted during EA are most often at the top of the applicant pool. They are usually well above the median with their stats. Just because you got deferred doesn’t mean you weren’t good enough or that you won’t be accepted. You just weren’t at the top of the applicant pool and they want to consider your application along with those submitted for regular decision. Universities accept very few during EA because they know that there will be other highly qualified applicants in the regular decision group. They have to leave enough spots open so that they can admit everyone that they feel is the best fit for their university. It may seem harsh, but it kind of makes sense. Running a university is a business. Rankings are important to all those applying. Each university wants to admit the best and brightest students from their applicant pool. In order to do that, they have to leave enough spots open after EA to consider everyone fairly. Does that make sense?

That being said, now is the time to finish strong with your first semester grades. I’m not sure what the letter said, but many times you can email the admissions office with updates on what you are doing or what you have accomplished. Do not give up! Many of you will be accepted during regular decision.

Oh, one other thing, a lot of this depends on the major to which you apply. The median admissions stats are for the university but they vary by major. The super competitive majors often have much higher median stats than those of the university. So you may be above the median for the university but average for the major to which you applied. For example, my daughter had a 3.9 in high school and was rejected by Cal Poly SLO for Psychology. She had friends with 3.2’s that got in! haha… On the other side, my son at Cal has much higher stats than the median stats listed for the university. However, he is in engineering and everyone’s stats are much much higher… Keep that in mind."

This made me and my daughter feel so much better. Also read the following statistics for LMU’s EA program, although not sure how much validity there is to it:
1/10 accepted
2/10 denied
7/10 deferred, with about 2-3/10 of those accepted in regular admissions

Keep the faith people! And Merry Christmas!!!
