Early Action Chances for out of state student?

My current GPA is 3.6 and my class rank is 16 of 129. I was a bit of a slacker during my freshmen and sophomore years but I redeemed myself during junior year. I finished with a 97 and ranked 2nd in my class. My school doesn't offer weighted GPA's and operates on a 4.0 scale. I recently got my SAT score back and I got a Cr- 570 M-510 W- 580.
I have taken the most rigorous classes that are available at my school which include three honors courses during my junior year. I am currently taking college credit bio, calc, and English. In the school community I'm pretty active serving as the president of student council, editor of the paper, president of the law club, president of national honor society, and a member of the Spanish national honor society. I also have 500 hours of community service teaching young children how to swim. Along with that I was one out of two students in my school who was awarded an internship with the D.A. that began in September.
On the recommendation forms all of my teachers rated me in the top five percent in every category which is the highest there is. My essay and short answer questions were very well written. I also received a 95 in the first semester of senior year and I decided to send the admissions committee my grades. Along with my required materials I decided attached a letter about personal growth and a resume. What are my chances?

Besides your SAT scores, I feel that you would definitely get into Maryland. If you do not mind me asking, what is your racial background? I feel that you should apply to some other schools that are ranked in the top 20 despite your SAT scores.

No I most certainly don't mind, I'm Caucasian. Thanks that's definitely reassuring. I actually decided not to apply to any top twenty schools because none of them really appealed to my interests. Maryland is one of my top schools along with Syracuse and I would be thrilled if I got into either or.

Where are you from? Remember they like a cross section and UMDCP is really sought sfter by people from NJ/NY so it is harder.

I'm actually from NY, but i'm the only person from my school that applied.

Any more opinions?

I'd say that your chances are not as good as Bruins suggests. I wouldn't agree with 'definitely' by any means.. maybe a 66.45327% chance? While your test scores are not bad, Maryland does not consider writing. A 1080 isn't bad, but it's not great, either. As bullet says, Maryland is VERY competitive for NY/NJ, due to the high level of applicants.

I agree with you xsteven. According to my research Maryland will be a bit of a reach. How you came up with your percentage is a bit baffling but I definitely love your methodology. I feel that my edge will lie within my essays, my recommendations, and my extracurricular activities. I also believe that since no one in my school has ever applied to Maryland in its history will be good for me. While NY maybe a difficult area to gain admissions from, recruiting from different high schools appears to be important to colleges. The more top tier schools they recruit from the better they look on paper. Thank you for your time I really appreciate it.

Here's the realistic look, statistically.

UMDCP accepts @30% OOS, this includes international. They had 28K applicants for 4K slots which means 1200 students are coming from other states.

Do I believe you arer in? Probably, definetly if you are from up state NY? Do I think that you are not understanding the comp. fro NJ/NY? Yes! UMD doesn't look to see if they have kids from that school they want the best students

From Newsweek the top 100 Public HS in the US:
11. City Honors
20 Jericho
47 So. Side Rockville
61 Cold Spring
67 Wheatley
68 John Miller
81 Pittsford Sutherland
82. Yonker
85 Dobbs Ferry
87 Rye
82. Edgemont

You should definetely get in, just realize it is very comp from NY...quick math shows that over 10% of the top 100 are from NY, for many of these kids UMD maybe a safety, especially since their eng./sci depts are top notch, than add in the honors program or gemstone where they are given merit scholarships, makes UMD very appealing. BK scholarship is very appealing.

Also remember the 1200 students are coming from 50 states and numerous international countries which makes it harder to get in.

Thanks a lot bullet, I really appreciate the reassurance. Maryland is in my top three schools and I really hope that I'm accepted. While I would say nothing is "definite" I also believe I have a decent shot. I guess only time will tell.
