Early Action for Dickinson 2015 Applicants

@westcoastmom22‌ not sure what you mean

in order to be considered for financial aid, students needed to file the CSS profile before the deadline (which is pegged to the deadline for your admission status - so one date for ED, one for EA, and one for RD). the CSS profile expects you to estimate 2014 tax data and/or report 2013 data. dickinson then required that families send the 2013 tax return as temporary verification. we filed all of that AND filed the FAFSA last month using estimated 2014 data (because the government allows you to estimate using the 2013 numbers and then go back and correct it later). dickinson wants the 2014 tax info sent to them (via IDOCS on the College Board website) by April 15th, but they issued a financial aid decision based on the info they already had on file. if the verification documents are significantly different, they have the right to amend the award. (in our case, it won’t make a difference, since they didn’t give us any need-based aid.)

@NEPatsGirl I’m sorry your daughter was disappointed. If she is still interested in Dickinson, she should continue to show interest. Submit her 1st semester grades, update with any new awards, etc. I think the deferral was probably a combination of her CR score, financial need and being a girl from the East Coast.

Deferred. Hmm…

I’m thinking it was mostly a financial aid thing, in my case. I had a $0 EFC, but everything else was pretty solid. 800 CR 620 M 730 W, 4.2 weighted GPA (mostly community college courses), decent-ish extracurriculars.

So yeah, I’m going to say that was an aid thing. Off to write a letter, and hope my SAT scores maybe earn me some points. I applied test-optional initially and only sent the scores in sometime in January (for, I thought, financial aid consideration).

Accepted!! with JOHN MONTGOMERY SCHOLARSHIP and plenty of FA

Accepted with John Dickinson Scholarship! I’m an international student. SAT superscore 2170, CR 650, Math 770, Writing 750. I applied for financial aid and they gave me scholarship. So excited!

Accepted with both John Dickinson Scholarship and Hugh B and Hellen K Woodward Scholarship!! I am an international student. SAT superscore 2150, CR 670, M 700, W 780. GPA 3.85/4.00. I truly cannot wait to become a Dickinsonian !!!

D accepted! So thrilled! Dickinson is. Great Place. Congrats to all who got it.

Wow. I really did not type that so well. Anyhow what I was trying to say is that my D was accepted and I am thrilled because I know Dickinson is a great place. Thanks

@vieviepu What are the Hugh B and Helen K Woodward Scholarships?

I received no financial aid so I would be seriously struggling to pay for it, is there any way to receive more scholarships?

I was accepted with the John Dickinson Scholarship. I have 2240 superscore SAT, 9 AP classes in including this year and all 5s so far. Decent ECs, very involved with my church and speech and debate. I interned at a genetics lab over the summer, play piano, and am a dispatcher with a local ambulance agency. Lots of in school awards for academics.

You got $20,000 knocked off the list price per year, right? That is pretty much the biggest merit scholarship you could expect from Dickinson. Did you run the net price calculator before applying? If that indicated that you would have gotten some need base aid beyond $20,000/year, then you could contact the financial aid office and ask for a review of your need based financial aid. But it is highly unlikely they would increase your merit aid somehow.

@vieviepu, I agree the EFC calculations are goofy. People in the middle are screwed. $150K in income to pay $60K in college is crazy after taxes (income, social security, state and medicare), living expenses, cloths, transportation, retirement, etc…but that said, at the end of the day you were rewarded the biggest available merit scholarship (that you deserved off your numbers!!), so I am not sure what you were expecting. We are a capitalist society and that is the way it works, everyone can’t get everything they want. You should look at schools that provide more assistance or look at your instate public university options. College can continue to raise rates as financial aid pays the bills, squeezing out those in the middle…

@DODIAT, we saved for our kids’ educations. In spite of a divorce my D1’s senior year of high school, no need based aid from Dickinson, and no help from her dad with college expenses outside what we had already saved, I managed to pay for a kid to get through Dickinson on an income that was lower than $150K. It can be done. She didn’t even take out loans. People are only really “screwed” if they didn’t plan and save ahead.

intparent I agree with you. One needs to plan and save…or look at other college options, there are plenty of opportunities out there for good students.

It isn’t crazy these days to start saving before the kid is even born…

Off topic for this thread, but we just chucked all of the money from our pre-tax day care accounts into the college fund whenever we got the reimbursement. That was about the best thing we could have done. I always tell young parents to think about doing this.

idk about the whole EFC thing. I had an EFC of 0 as well but I still got in. 32 ACT 4.1 Weighted GPA, all year round swimmer. I only got the Dean’s Scholarship, but PLENTY of grant money.

If they deferred you and you have a 0 EFC, it is most likely that they are waiting to see what the rest of the class will look like before making you a financial aid offer. They aim for a specific overall discount rate, and it is much easier to predict when you have the full applicant pool to look at.

Well, that makes sense. Our EFC is under $6K but there is a bioDad in the picture so he submitted the NCP as well. We’ll just have to wait and see. I think D’s deferral was simply a reality-check…even if you are in the top ratios for testing, GPA, etc. it doesn’t mean you are a shoe-in by any means. Dickinson was considered a high safety/low match for D’s stats and the deferral came as a surprise, one of many to come I’m sure. One of the reason she applied there was to get out of the NE school zone, thinking that would increase her chances, but I guess that wasn’t reason enough lol.
