Early action or rolling admissions - how quickly do you hear

I’ve seen a lot of recommendations for early action apps to Pitt. How quickly do they typically get back to applicants if you apply in September? Thanks!

It’s not early action - Pitt is rolling admission. So the earlier the better.

S23 applied Aug 1 (the day it opened, via Common App). Accepted Sept 5, I think. It would’ve been sooner but kiddo had an error on the Common App that created confusion.

Pitt has rolling admissions, not early action. It is recommended to apply as early as possible. Turnaround time can vary depending on the strength of the applicant and the school they are applying to. Strong applicants tend to hear back quicker than weaker ones. Sometimes weaker applicants are asked for first semester grades which means you won’t get a response until after those are submitted. They also seem to release them in waves by school. One day a bunch of engineering students will hear. On another day it will be business school students. In general, Pitt says 4-6 weeks but that is a very rough estimate.

Great thank you! Hbd seen lots of recommendations to get one in the bag to ease pressure a bit. And it’s a good school!

She will be around a 3.85uw/4.2 W with 8 AP and 2 DE. Strong and relevant ECs. Test optional. Poli sci or similar. Would that be strong in your view? OOS, full pay.

Pitt us a fine school but other schools are rolling too. If you like Pitt, then apply. If you just want a rolling or early admission there are other schools too - you’d hear back even in a couple days.

You’ll get into Pitt with those stats but likely no merit.

Do you have a budget ? You may be full pay but that doesn’t mean you want to spend $60k a year.

Other schools and cheaper where you’d get merit and you’d hear just as soon if not sooner - example Arizona, Alabama and others.

Why test optional ? Have you tried a test ? For some schools it can be the difference between merit and not.

Anyway, it’d be nice to have one in the bag but you’ll have admits and even merit to many schools if you plan your overall list right. Those who get locked out mainly do so for not having a balanced list.

Best of luck.

I expect she’ll get in, and yes, Pitt is a great school esp if one wants an urban environment (less popular among those who don’t). It’s relatively easy to fly in and our too - or Amtrak stops in the city.

I’ve seen several students use it as a safety, then choose it above their other “favorites” after visiting.

From OOS it can be pricy, but that can be considered once all acceptances are in to see if it’s “worth it” compared to other opportunities.

Price looks right as her other options are BC, Syracuse, Lehigh, Denver, Santa Clara, American and Elon. Plus a few larger state schools for safeties. . So we are okay to pay if needed. Pitt may be a bit too urban (GW didn’t work for her) but city of Pitt has lots to offer too and seems to me a good vibe. She hasn’t visited but would if she gets in.

(Lucky she’s an only child or we wouldn’t be as comfortable with the crazy tuitions!)

GW is more urban than Pitt. Syracuse is similar. All are in cities, of course, but the “vibe” of campus vs city is different.

Best wishes on your journey!

You might add a College of Charleston. Smaller city. Better weather. Beach access. Very good Poli sci opps. Check the Charleston Fellow Program. International Scholars if interested in international politics. And the Mroz Institute. They also have a DC semester which my student will attend in the fall. Many colleges have something similar.

Pitt was an option but given her love of Charleston she declined Pitt. Truth is the school (Pitt) has a wonderful rep on this website. They also offered my daughter guaranteed entrance to their MPA program if that ends up being a desire. And nothing in cooler than flying into Pittsburgh, driving from the airport to the city and poof- when you get out of a tunnel the city magically appears.

Elon is beautiful but stands out to me as different in that the rest are surrounded by city of some level in the immediate area whereas Elon is not.

But it is a safety for your student as is Denver.

And don’t forget that you have WUE available to you (if in Oregon).

Best of luck.

@OregonMom2024 do you want suggestions for other rolling admissions colleges? Are you desiring merit aid? If so, folks can suggest these for you.

If not, we can concentrate our answers on the colleges you are asking about.

Re: Pitt. It’s a great school in a vibrant and not gigantic city. I think your daughter has a good chance of acceptance but I’m not an adcom. Apply as soon as the application opens in August. She will hear quickly one way or another.

Thanks, as of now I think she will apply rolling to IU and Pitt. Both larger than she intends but great programs. I didn’t see any other comparable non religious mid size private schools on the list … she prefers NE or mid Atlantic.

But ideas are always welcome! Big commitment to Study abroad and a friendly vibe are important. Aesthetics important to her. Quads, etc. Sports nice to have, but not a must. Fairly liberal. …

She’s pretty liberal so has some concerns in red states. How’s the campus politics?

Please clarify if you want to have suggestions only in the mid Atlantic and northeast…because that will eliminate a lot of suggestions in the southeast, and southwest. Then again…if you want those suggestions…let folks here know.

Any specific major??

C of Charleston is 10k ish students, many from OOS. Delaware likely too big. May look at Binghamton. Those three are likely. And as a reach W&M - similar to Elon in some ways but a bit more close into society.

All publics.

Best of luck.

Ps - you noted American. Get on their interest list. Attend a webinar or two and open their emails, play their videos etc. interest matters there (and some of your others - like SU).

You may consider setting up a college only email. Get on the lists of any schools of potential interest - and those that require interest (likely the privates), interact with their emails, even if you play a video and walk away.

Best of luck

Thanks. She has toured American, Lehigh and Elon. Follow up emails to all. Did webinars at AU. Lehigh and SU. Taking a on campus credit class at Syracuse this summer so that should help. Weird question …if she did all that under a previous email will it carry over if she creates new email? It’s harder to show interest from the west coast since there aren’t events or visiting counselors here.

In addition to Pitt, for his early rolling admission likely schools, my son applied to Oregon State and U Minnesota. That last one might be cold, but it’s a great school for a wide variety of things! Another even more likely school that will send an acceptance right away in the fall is U New Mexico. These are all friendly vibe, liberal, have study abroad, etc. My son also received large merit scholarships from all of them.

@OregonMom2024 this thread is in the Pitt forum. If you want a more general thread about other schools you may want to ask a mod to move it or start a new thread. You will get more widespread input elsewhere.

To answer some questions about Pitt, it is urban but right next to a very large park. It really isn’t like GW. As for politics, while PA is a swing state, the cities are liberal. The school definitely has a progressive vibe.

I can move this if you want…to college search and selection or someplace else.
