Early decision 2 ???

Can anyone explain the early decision II options that some schools offer? For what reason do they offer it? I'm wondering how it benefits the school?

Like ED I, ED II tells a school that it is your clear first choice and will attend (given enough financial aid but that really shouldn’t be a problem if you decide to apply ED) but as opposed to ED I, ED II gives more time for the applicant to visit the school and look at it and decide that it is his/her #1 choice.

For some colleges that have a fairly early ED 2 application deadline, like Carnegie Mellon, it is simply designed to give some a little more time to apply ED and it is really no different than ED 1. For others, whose ED2 deadline is after mid-Dec, it is specifically designed to pick up applicants who are not accepted ED1 from higher ranked colleges.

ED II just gives an applicant enough time to decide a college is their first choice. It is binding as ED I and financial aid wont be a problem in ED II as well. You can look at a lists of colleges that offers ED II and EA II at usacollegeapplication.blogspot.com

To the college, the advantage of ED2 is the same as ED1 – if they accept you, you’re going there!!

This option gives students some flexibility – maybe someone applied to a real real reach as ED1 and got rejected, or maybe the student just needed more time to decide that the school was the college of their dreams.
