Early Decision Applicant - Class of 2016

I still don’t really know why I’m not accepted… I guess I just didn’t measure up to the other EDers.
I have a. 3.8 cumulative GPA so far, several AP classes (got a 4 on english last year), 31 ACT, 620 650 670 SATs, extracuriculars, leadership, and good letters of recommendation. I am a swimmer and I even visited campus from AZ for the sports visitation program. I met the coach, had an interview that I thought went really well, and so overall I thought I was a good candidate for MHC. They even said they give athletes a priority.

So I’m just confused as to what my downfall is. All I can guess is that the caliber of applicants is incredibly high and I simply don’t stand out.

I’m hoping to get into Smith though. I’m writing a diffent essay and improving my application, so hopefully I have a good chance there - although I haven’t interviewed or personally met anybody there.
(sorry for any typos but im on my phone)

I got deferred as well :frowning: I had offered to pay 15k. Is that too less? And btw, is deferred synonymous with rejected for mount Holyoke

@jportman - Superb  Have a great time at Mount Holyoke. By the way, how much is your parent’s contribution!

@Tsering1508 : Even I was wondering. No one has been rejected yet :stuck_out_tongue: They are either accepted or deferred! Sorry, but has anyone been rejected?

I was wondering too, in all my googling and searching discussion boards I haven’t come across any ED applicants yet who were actually rejected.

I guess they just want to keep us around and stack us up against the RD applicants later if it comes down to where they’d end up maybe choosing some of those that were deferred. Like a backup choice? I’d rather be straight up rejected and then reapply or move on, personally! Oh well though, it is what it is and I’m sure we will all end up in a good school one way or another.

@barefootJ : Very true. And you know what most of the colleges who defer/wait list you get an agreement signed where you accept wait list/defer offer. But I didn’t get anything as such from Mount Holyoke. My brother was deferred by Duke last time and he had to do the same. By the way, he has been accepted by Tufts this year with full aid. He had applied to ED1.

Congrats to everyone who got in ED! I heard back and got in  Super excited.
Sorry to those who got deferred. Best of luck to you for regular decision. Got my fingers crossed for you!

COngratulations leebee! :)

@Pripan: My parents’ contribution is 11k, the rest is from outside loan (about 5-6k I think)

@Pripan
@Tsering1508

Are you two still hoping to get in, and will either of you be sending in additional materials?

While creating a new-and-improved version of my application for other colleges, I’ve realized there are several areas of my application that I needed to expand on and improve. I’ve done more extracurriculars, won an award since then, and overall I’m just trying to make my application a more complete picture of me. I’m also going to write a completely different essay. I also want to write a letter explaining a very bad class grade I ended up with last year.
If I want to still shoot for MoHo would it make sense to ask to have my previous application withdrawn, and then resubmit the new version in common app for RD? Or should I just leave it alone and send in extra material?
I’m still undecided anyway though on what I will do. Just some thoughts. This is a big scary process for me especially because I do my schooling online and I don’t really have teachers, counselors, and other students to discuss all this with.

Do NOT withdraw any applications, at any college, unless you are no longer interested in the college.

If you have something that you want to change or add, do that.

If you have any additional accomplishments since your ED application, you should send that in as well just to update your file.

@barefootJ just remember, small liberal arts colleges like MHC are admitting individuals, but they are also trying to build a class. I knew someone who had an AMAZING record but was waitlisted (though she was eventually accepted) and the only reason I could imagine she was waitlisted was because there just might have been too many people in her academic area. There need to be theatre majors and social science majors, science majors, music majors…and they need basketball players and volleyball players as well as swimmers! I hope you get accepted with the regular decision group!

Best of luck to all!

I got in! (: I made a group on facebook, so anyone that got in can join!

Congratulations to everyone accepted!!! :)

I’m applying RD. How long were your supplement responses?

@penguin369 My supplement was a little over one page in Word. If I remember, I wrote 3 long paragraphs. I wrote about why I know MHC is the perfect college for me and proved to them that I belong at their college. I expressed all the reasons that I wanted to go and should go to MHC.

@Pripan, I hate to disappoint you but Mount Holyoke rarely denies or waitlists anyone for financial aid reasons only. This comes from someone who had to apply twice and needed significant amount of aid both times. It may be how you compared to other applicants, or it may be some weakness in your app that you are not even aware of. (this comes from personal experience as well) That being said, fin aid is very important factor, but believe me it is not the only one.

@jezda3 - Thanks for your reply! Getting waitlisted/deferred by a college is not the end of the world. Also, it’s neither a disappointment nor a big set-back which closes all my options. It’s really good that they do not waitlist applicants on the basis of financial-aid but my case is different. I can’t pay a single penny other than my air-ticket. I guess my application was not complete as I was asked for some documents a few days before the decisions were out. May be they put on waitlist to those applicants whose files are incomplete. Also, I have gap-years, so that may be another factor. As ED is highly selective and they need almost perfect applicants, may be they take gap year as negative. But one deferral can’t emphasize that I am incapable of Mount Holyoke. I strongly believe in myself and my application to Mount Holyoke. I am waiting for RD decisions. In case, it doesn’t turn out in my favor, I will surely ask admission official about my short-comings and would try to improve it. I guess admin off. would not mind replying to such emails.

May be I can take some suggestions from you since you applied twice!

By the way, are you studying at Mount Holyoke at present? If yes, I am big-fan and simply love your college. :)

Thank you once again for the reply.

omg i applied early decision as well. I got in!!! I am so excited!!
Good job to all the other who got in…
those who got deferred… My fingers are crossed for you…but remember whatever happens, only happens for the best :D

Hi, I am an international applicant applying via RD.
Congratulations to all who have been accepted, and had anyone accepted did the second essay question (the miracle one)? I struggled to choose between why MHC and the miracle question and finally picked the miracle one…

Hi girls! I am an EDII applicant from China and just this afternoon I received an admission letter. I was admitted!!! I would like to know more current students and anyone who is going to attend MHC feel free to contact me.:)
