I’m in!!! So over the moon excited! Could someone PM me the Facebook group… Congrats to everyone :)

Hey, I need at least one member to start the 2017 group. Does someone want to send me their Facebook?

Congrats to those who got in! Can’t wait to see you next fall. :)

About the facebook group…
Bowdoin will actually have an official one for you. If there’s nothing about it in the email, the information about it will arrive in the mail later.

Click on the link for enrollment. It has a link for the official group! :)

congrats to everyone who got accepted!!! :D

I was deferred but not too bummed about it (:

My son is in also! Very excited!!

I still can’t believe I got in. This is the best day of my life. Getting into Bowdoin totally validates all of the hard work and hours of studying. Can’t wait to start school next year!

Congrats to you admittants and to all applicants. anyone who worked hard enough to even be considered by a school of this caliber should consider him/her self a very special person. There is a lot of randomness in the selection process (where you were born, needs of the college this year, etc.) So please remember that things will work out and I think there are at least 20 excellent college fits for any applicant.

YES! I’m in… Now I’m still thrilled by what happened.

Congrats to all :D

I am ED2 applicant. Also want to get in!!

just submitted my ED II app a few hours ago :)

good luck to you MDNeuroHopeful :-bd

to those have been admitted: Have you guys submitted the midyear report yet?

For ED II, how much do you think admissions looks at term 2 grades. My term ends January 30th so I assume they won’t be able to send grades out until February 1-4th after grades are confirmed. That being said, this wouldn’t give admissions much time to review all ED II applicants on how they did term two. Do you think on admissions will have time to look at quarter two? Is it true that last year they notified ED II candidates around Feb 7th last year?

Has anyone else gotten a Bowdoin portal thing? My friend didn’t but she did RD (I did ED2) so I’m wondering if that’s why.

Decisions for ED2 released on the 4th! Good luck everyone!

If anyone has any questions about Bowdoin’s sciences/premed progression/research opportunities feel free to PM or just ask on here. I don’t check often but I’ll write what I can if something pops up.

I’m currently a second year med student and should be able to answer pretty much anything, so don’t be afraid to ask anything you want.

Hi bobow98! I want to major in Physics. I know that the professors are great (I met one). I would like to know what the average size of physics classes are from freshman to senior year. Also, I would like to have some additional information and general impressions on the research opportunities. Is it only conducted during the summer? Is it only available to upperclassmen?

One more question, what do physics majors do after they graduate? Around what percent go off to grad school? Do some get accepted to the Ivies? Where do they go work if they don’t continue their education?

Hi IBinLux,

As you know freshman physics is a required class for both Physics majors and for aspiring premeds. You’ll get a mix of the two in both Phys 103 and 104. If you have AP credit you can simply place out of 103, which I would recommend you do if you are serious about physics.
I personally stopped at physics 104 (E&M) and 162 (stars and galaxies) so I can’t give you too much information about the upper levels from my personal experience.

My friend added on his Physics major to his biochemistry major at the last minute at the end of junior year and was able to finish it without a hitch. He told me that as you move into the 200 levels of physics, the class size gets way smaller (sometimes less than 10) and you get better instruction as the professor starts branching into topics within his/her expertise.

For the 100 levels, Karen Topp (wife of Baumgart) is the best teacher by far. Nachulich is a genius in my mind but can’t communicate his genius ideas to the normal folk like me. Baumguart is pretty decent - I had him for 104. They say to stay away from Battle like the plague if you can help it, though I’m not sure why. Apparently he’s a bad teacher for the 100 level classes.

Msall is pretty cool (with her dyed purple hair) and does a lot of the upper level experimental physics (rather than theoretical which is within Baumguart and Naculich’s realm) - you get to do some cool projects in her classes.

Research wise, if you want to, you could probably get in on a project by sophomore year as long as you show interest and talk to the professors. Research is easy to come by at Bowdoin because there are no grad students to compete with, as with all LACs.

-As for after Bowdoin, physics majors tend to go on to grad programs. My friend went to medical school. A bunch of people are also Physics/Math so they have options from there as well, usually tending toward the academic.

A cool thing about physics at Bowdoin is that they have a 3+2 program where you can do your 3 years at Bowdoin until Junior year and then go on to Columbia University to do 2 years of a BS there, it might be in engineering. You pay tuition for 4 Bowdoin years on that program I think. Two friends of mine did it and they’ really enjoyed going that route.

So while it’s a small department, with not a lot of students, it seems to be a pretty strong department with resources.
